stocking stuffers

The holidays are just around the corner and more than likely you’ve got a gamer on your shopping list. It can be hard to know what exactly to get the gamer that seems to have it all—just ask my wife. Regardless if you are just beginning to shop or finishing it off, I’ve come up with six ideas that would be perfect stocking stuffers that they will love.

Digital gift cards

If you are looking to put a little something in the stocking of the gamer on your holiday shopping list or shopping on a budget—digital gift cards, make perfect stocking stuffers. Regardless if they have a PlayStation 4, Xbox One or Nintendo Switch—Best Buy Canada has you covered. With digital gift cards, the gamer on your list can use it to purchase a brand new game.

In addition to full game downloads you can also purchase game add-ons like expansion packs and DLC. I prefer using digital gift cards, as many gamers aren’t very keen with saving credit card information on their game consoles. You have greater security and feel peace of mind using prepaid cards to purchases in the online stores.

Online memberships

Another great idea for stocking stuffers for the gamer on your holiday shopping list is a subscription to premium services such as PlayStation Plus, Xbox Live Gold and Nintendo Switch Online. These premium subscription services allow for online multiplayer gaming and a wide range of exclusive benefits.

For example, each month PlayStation Plus and Xbox Live Gold members get free games to download and play. In the month of November PlayStation 4 owners got BulletStorm: Full Clip Edition and Yakuza Kiwami. While Xbox Live Gold members got Battlefield 1, Race the Sun, Assassin’s Creed and Dante’s Inferno. While Nintendo Switch owners saw their classic NES games collection grow with the addition of Metroid, Mighty Bomb Jack, and TwinBee.

Additionally, members of these premium services get special discounts, exclusive betas, demos and online game saves.

Xbox Game Pass

If you have an Xbox One gamer on your holiday shopping list and are looking to put a little something in their stocking, then you can’t go wrong a subscription to Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass. Xbox Game Pass offers a huge selection of titles to play including highly-anticipated new Xbox One exclusives the day they are released. Games like Forza Horizon 4, Sea of Thieves and State of Decay 2.

Think of it as a Netflix-style subscription service for video games. There is also a wide selection of games from major studios like SEGA, Capcom, 2K Games, Bandai Namco and more.

PlayStation 4 Fortnite DualShock 4 Controller

Fortnite is the world’s most popular Battle Royale game. It’s easy to understand why, too, when you consider how committed Epic Games is to keeping the experience fresh. Over the last several months the game has radically transformed with several map, weapons, and items updates. Not only that, the gameplay performance and controls have undergone several optimization iterations. If the gamer on your holiday shopping list loves Fornite, then this controller makes a great stocking stuffer.

With the controller is a voucher for exclusive DLC that you can not get anywhere else—Royal Bomber outfit. In addition, you get 500 V-bucks—Fornite’s in-game currency.

Nintendo Switch memory card

The Nintendo Switch comes with built in memory, which quickly gets used up. Quite a few Nintendo Switch games require additional downloads for games. Factor in DLC add-ons and eShop titles and it quickly becomes apparent that Switch owners need more storage space.

The system accepts Micro SD cards to easily expand storage space. However, there are many different Micro SD cards out there. I highly recommend the SanDisk Ultra PLUS 64GB microSDXC memory card. It adds an additional 64 GB of space, and is a great value for the price. Additionally, it supports data read speeds up to 80MB/s, so games will load fast.

Starlink: Battle for Atlas Packs

Starlink: Battle for Atlas is a brand new game from the folks at Ubisoft Toronto and is one of my favourite games this fall. It allows you to build and customize your starship in real life before taking it into battle. You can mix and match pilots, hulls, wings, and weapons to build the best Starship in the galaxy.

If the gamer on your list already has the game, or is on their list–these additional packs are perfect. The Starship Pack includes one starship with modular hull and two wings, one pilot and one weapon. The Weapon Pack includes two weapons while the Pilot Pack includes a brand new pilot.

  1. I’m not sure a 64 GB micro SD card would be big enough. Might be better to try 128 GB.

I know that I would definitely love to get a Nintendo Switch eshop card for Christmas!
