Adventure Time

Adventure TimeIt’s time to save the Land of Ooo once again!

Finn and Jake have saved the Land of Ooo more times than you can count on two hands—but, this time, they might be in over their heads. Adventure Time Pirates of the Enchiridion is the latest adaptation of one of Cartoon Network’s most popular animated TV shows. Though there have been many tries at capturing the essence of what makes the TV show great, no game until now has captured that magic.

And, although Adventure Time Pirates of the Enchiridion does have its faults—Climax Studios have made a game that offers an experience fans will enjoy. Get ready to explore the high seas, search for hidden clues, and solve the mystery of the Land of Ooo.

Adventure TimeSomebody is up to bad biscuits!

The game starts out one night with Finn, Jake and BMO star gazing. Shortly after BMO turns in for the night, we find Finn and Jake fast sleep. The next day, they awake to find the Land of Ooo underwater.

Our favourite duo takes to the high seas to discover what has happened and to save the kingdoms of Ooo. Fans of the show will appreciate at just how well written and humorous the game is. It is as good as the animated series and the pirate theme adds to the overall experience.

And, despite the animated TV series coming to an end this September, Adventure Time Pirates of the Enchiridion is a perfect way fans can continue the adventures of Finn and Jake.

Adventure TimeTravel and explore the Land of Ooo

You’ll travel between Kingdoms aboard Finn and Jake’s new boat along with BMO and Marceline. Along the way you’ll encounter Pirates and discover treasures in the waters. Controlling Finn and Jake’s boat, Jeff, is done by pressing a button to move forward and a button to move backwards.

Jake can easily snatch up floating wooden creates in the water, with a press of a button, which are filled with treasures to help you out along your journey. Once you make it to land, you can control any of the four characters that make up your party. This is important because some situations require the special skills of certain party members. Luckily, when those situations arise their character icon animates at the bottom of the screen to let you know.

Battle and interrogate to solve the mystery

Battling the bad guys is done via traditional RPG turn-based combat. Action is fast paced, which allows you to use all of your character’s abilities. You can use spells, potions, and items to attack your enemy or to buff your party.

Additionally, each of the characters have ultimate hero abilities that dish out major damage. Moreover, you can upgrade your character’s stats by using the money you gain from each victory and find around the Kingdoms.

One of my favourite parts of the game are the interrogation sequences. Finn and Jake play the roles of “good cop, bad cop” as you gather info, learn about side quests, collect loot and more. Each time I found myself cracking up laughing at the duo. After each question, the two chat about what to do next. This gives you an idea if you should go soft or lead with a firm foot.

Adventure TimeAn authentic Adventure Time experience

Adventure Time Pirates of the Enchiridion uses cel-shaded graphics that fit the game perfectly. It feels at times as if you are playing an episode of the animated TV show. I did however experience some performance issues while playing. When sailing on the sea there were times that the game would freeze for a few seconds while the music continued to play. Fortunately, this doesn’t happen very often and doesn’t take away from the overall experience.

Another issue I encountered was when my party went into battle. The fight loading screen comes up and after several seconds the battle begins. What makes it a bit weird is that while the game is loading the battle you can sometimes hear your characters talking and or sound effects like they are already fighting. Again, it never really takes away from gameplay, but it is something worth mentioning.

Fans of the show will instantly recognize the original series’ voice actors are used in the game. And, the game’s soundtrack sounds like something you would hear right from one of the animated TV show episodes. Despite the few performance flaws, which may or may not be able to be fixed by an update, I was fairly impressed with the game’s overall presentation.

Adventure TimeFinal Thoughts

Adventure Time Pirates of the Enchiridion is the game that fans of the animated TV series have been waiting for. While there are a few performance issues with the game every now and then, they never really took away from my overall enjoyment with the game. Fans will appreciate the use of the animated TV series voice actors, and the game’s writing is spot on with the show as well.

Navigating around the open world is easy, effortless, and comes with a map to help you along the way. The turn-based battles are fun and I really like that you can use an item before attacking. This allows you to heal or buff your party and then make the attack.

I feel that the game is balanced enough so that not can adults enjoy it but also younger kids. If you even have a remote interest in the Adventure Time series, I recommend you checking out Adventure Time Pirates of the Enchiridion.
