Advance Wars 1 + 2 Re-Boot Camp was supposed to launch way back in 2021. However, delays in the game’s development, and the start of the war in Ukraine, compelled Nintendo to push it back.

Just a few weeks ahead of the game’s launch, I had the opportunity to play a few hours of the game. Whether this preview or in my final review, the question will be: do all the delays make me more hyped for the game, or less? Let’s dive in!

This combination game includes the content from both the GameBoy Advanced versions of Advance Wars 1 and Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising. This game is not short on content, and in the first few hours you get a real sense of what to expect. I had the chance to play through the first handful of missions from Advance Wars, and here are just a few of the things I noticed.

New coat of paint, old systems

If you played the original games on the GameBoy Advanced, the new coat of paint applied to the game should be quite obvious. The updated graphics and vibrant colours look amazing, and really pop, especially when playing handheld. New animations and new character design leads the charge in a game filled with graphical updates. It is now a game that doesn’t look out of place in 2023, and for those who have no history with the original, it will feel like it’s brand new this year.

While a new coat of paint is almost necessary, the classic strategy gameplay remains unchanged. You will control your army, with the goal of defeating the enemy by capturing their HQ. Cities around the map can be conquered, increasing the income you earn each turn. You can also heal and repair units in cities, if they are left for a few in-game turns. It’s a classic system that worked a long time ago, and still works today. The classic, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” mantra is very much true here.

Your army is controlled by a Commanding Officer who has their own unique abilities. There are a number to choose from, all of which feel very different. My personal favourite to use is Andy, who can heal units all over the battlefield. This came in handy many times when I didn’t want to waste turns stationing my tanks and troops in buildings. Another Commanding Officer, Grit, can extend the range at which units can attack.

Accessible to all audiences

The tutorial in Advance Wars 1 + 2 has been greatly reduced from the original campaign. And this is actually a good thing. However, getting into the game is much faster than it used to be. Not to worry though, for those who need all of these tutorials, it still does a great job providing you all the information you need. It just does it much faster than it used to, getting you into the game faster.

Advance Wars 1 + 2 Re-Boot Camp has a lot to be excited about

Ultimately, fans of the series are in for a real treat come April 21, 2023 when Advance Wars 1 + 2 Re-Boot Camp launches. The updated graphics look amazing, and provide new flare to an old experience.

As a result, new players will enjoy this as well, as the game is built on solid gameplay mechanics. While I can’t completely score the experience until I have played the entire game, I am impressed so far.
