PlayStation 5

Over the last year Sony has given us tidbits of information on its upcoming next generation console, PlayStation 5. In March, Lead System Architect Mark Cerny gave an in-depth talk on the hardware technical specs for PlayStation 5. Then, in April, the PS5 controller aptly named DualSense was revealed.

And, today, we got to see what the PlayStation 5 itself looks like and a first look at next-gen games running on PS5. Actually, we got to see what both models of the PlayStation 5 look like. More on that below!

PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Digital Edition

In a surprising announcement, Sony revealed that gamers will have the choice between 2 PlayStation 5 systems at launch. The first, is a PlayStation 5 standard console that includes an Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive. The second, is called the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition and it does not include a disc drive.

Both consoles offer the same gameplay experience as each other and have the exact same technical specifications. The only difference is that one will accept physical games and the other one is download only.

The PlayStation 5 Digital Edition is pictured above and to the left. And, on the right is the PlayStation 5 with a slot loading Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive. The PS5 Digital Edition looks quite a bit thinner and more likely lighter weight than the disc based PS5. The PS5 and DualSense controller follows a black-and-white colour scheme. Where the shell of the PS5 is white and the core is black.

On the front of each system there appears to be a USB and USB-C port. And, it looks like this is the USB port where you are able to hook up external drives to store PS5 games on and play PS4 games from. The USB-C port is most likely where you plug the DualSense controller in to charge. And, for those you wondering, yes can lay the PS5 horizontally!

PlayStation 5 accessories

In addition to showing of both PS5 systems and games running on PS5, Sony also gave us a glimpse of some accessories to go with its new next generation console. No prices for the accessories were announced, nor were their release dates. Though, I can safely say that we should see these launch alongside the PS5 this holiday season.

The first new accessory shown today was the DualSense Charging Station. It allows you to charge up to 2 DualSense controllers at once. And, interestingly enough, it looks as if controllers are charged through a port on the bottom of the controller rather than the USB-C port on the top.

PlayStation 5Next, the HD Camera was shown. This new camera features dual 1080p lenses, which allows you to stream yourself from the comfort of your living room during epic gameplay moments. Although not mentioned, I’m sure the new dual 1080p lenses have a dual purpose and come into play with the PSVR or PSVR2 on the PS5.

PlayStation 5Thirdly, the Pulse 3D wireless headset offers 3D audio support, a new and much touted feature found in the PS5. It comes equipped with dual noise-cancelling microphones and replaces the PlayStation Gold wireless headset. Moreover, the Pulse 3D headset also requires a USB dongle plugged into the system to work.

PlayStation 5Finally, the Media Remote. This remote comes with a microphone built-in to make navigating your way through movies and streaming services that much easier. What really caught my eye on the Media Remote is the 4 unmarked buttons at the bottom. I’m not quite sure that they are used for and at this point Sony isn’t telling.

I’ve got to admit, I was totally caught off guard when Sony announced that the PlayStation 5 will launch this holiday with 2 models: PlayStation 5 standard model and PlayStation 5 Digital Edition. I think that it is a great idea to give gamers the choice between 2 systems.

On one hand, you have gamers who like to purchase physical games and watch Ultra HD Blu-ray movies. For them, the PlayStation 5 standard model with disc drive is the best option. And, for those gamers who love the convenience of purchasing their games digitally and streaming their movies, the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition is the perfect choice.

At first, I wasn’t sure quite how I felt about the look of the PlayStation 5. Though, the more that I look at it, the more I like what I see. Ultimately, it really doesn’t matter what the system looks like. It all comes down to the games.
