Nindies Night

It’s no secret that the Nintendo Switch has been a giant success. It’s caught the attention of developers around the world and has an amazing line up of games. Some of which include big name titles such as Mario Odyssey, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and Pokemon Let’s Go—just to name a few.

However, the Switch is also home to a wide variety of indie titles that are developed by independent studios without the financial backing of a publisher. This past Thursday, Nintendo of Canada along with YouTube invited media and creators to a special Nindies Night Showcase at YouTube Space Toronto. The event celebrated Canadian indie developers, and focused on some of Toronto’s best, showing their latest video games.

Nindies Night

Nindies NightGuacamelee! 2 – DrinkBox Studios

Best known for the Guacamelee! series of video games, DrinkBox Studios was on hand at Nindies Night with Guacamelee! 2. If you’ve never had a chance to play either Guacamelee! game, you really should. Guacamelee! 2 is a metroidvania-style adventure that stars Juan Aguacate, a luchador.

He has a full arsenal of high-flying wrestling moves, punches, and kicks. The game features bright colourful 2D graphics along with a cast of characters that celebrate Mexican culture and is full of 4-player local co-op non-stop action. Guacamelee! 2 takes place 7 years after the first game.

Juan and Lupita, El Presidente’s daughter, are married with two children. One day dark clouds begin to appear and the Mexiverse is thrown back into danger. Juan must stop Salvador, another luchador, and his underlings from collecting relics and putting an end of all timelines.

Nindies NightSuper Crush KO – Vertex Pop

Vertex Pop’s last game, Graceful Explosion Machine, debuted on the Switch back in 2017. This past Thursday, at Nindies Night, they had a playable demo of their upcoming game called Super Crush KO. This game really caught my eye and is what I spent the majority of the night playing.

Set to release sometime in 2019, Super Crush KO is hybrid brawler/shoot-em up that is filled with fast-paced action. Your mission is to save humanity from an AI apocalypse by destroying the on coming waves of robots. What initially caught my eye about this game is its futuristic setting and use of vibrant colours through out the game.

Though, what really got me hooked is Super Crush KO’s deep combat system. The game encourages you to take out the robot AI by chaining together huge combos. This is accomplished very easily with easy-to-execute combos. I’m really looking forward to Super Crush KO later this year when it launches on the Nintendo Switch.

Nindies NightSuperbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP – Capybara Games

Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery was first released on mobile devices back in 2011 and is seeing new life on the Nintendo Switch. The game takes place over 4 seasons where you control a Scythian warrior with the ability to travel between the real world and the dream world. You must use your sword to do battle and solve musical mysteries.

What makes gameplay interesting is the fact that the phases of the moon have an affect on the world around you. As a result, some events and passages can only occur at a specific time.

Nindies NightLight Fingers – Numizmatic Games

Last, and certainly not least, Numizmatic Games was in attendance with their game Light Fingers. This game is a board game, party, platformer where you control one of 4 thieves. You navigate around a game board and your missions is to get a specific amount of loot before the end of a turn limit.

You have to be careful though. Other players can steal your loot, though not without risks. The game’s medieval theme makes for a unique experience. The game supports up to 4 local players, which means you and your friends can battle it out for the race to get the loot.

  1. I thought the original Guacamelee looked interesting, but I haven’t yet added it to my backlog. I think I’ll have to reconsider that because the games look fun!

Super Crush KO really looks like it has that brawler feel. I’ve always enjoyed brawlers but wish that I was better at them.

I’ve seen Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery on the appstore for years but it never really appealed to me. I’m glad though that it is seeing new life on Switch!

Of the trailers here, I think I am most intrigued by Light Fingers. It seems like a fun board game style experience on the Switch. My only wish is that either I had more friends locally to play with or that it has online funcionality as well.

Hey Jon, thanks for showing us what was available at #NindiesNight!
