Ready for the next GB4 games
We start off as a young player participating in the beta phase of the new fighting game GUNPLA Battle Blaze: beyond borders. With our friends, we visit arenas to learn the basics of this simulator. But a bug disrupts everything. Our teammate is affected, as the opponents suddenly get stronger. In addition, this bug unlocks our awakening power, normally only available to experienced fighters. If the first chapter went fine, the first battle of chapter 2 introduced stronger opponents. We then returned to normal until the next bug. All this is very interesting and we will find out what happens in this GBBBB (or GB4) game.
Two or three of our companions Lin, Lilin, Sheena, Mister and Tao will face a number of robots in the arena. Mission types vary from eliminating all opponents, protecting a base, and guardian battles that put us to the test at the end. In any case, I like the way they appear in their box before showing up in three dimensions. We team up with virtual players throughout the mission. The story is pretty simple. However, it serves as a good introduction to the basics and the different options available in Gundam Breaker 4.
Lots of ways to have fun
I enjoyed launching some side missions but my main interest in Gundam Breaker 4 is for the campaign mode. I have to say that I have not followed the franchise since its beginnings so I am not really attached to any of the characters. However, since this is the first time we hear the characters speak English in a Gundam game, I found it easier to immerse myself in the scenario. It’s not very complex but players should expect some surprises.
In addition to the story, Gundam Breaker 4 offers multiplayer battles for fun with friends, bounty hunter missions and side quests. Special events will also be planned throughout the year to keep fans interested. After each battle, we are welcomed into a room where we can visit the kiosks dedicated to each option, be it the missions, the shop and the place to manage our clans. Unfortunately, I find it quite empty in relation to the size of the place.
A great customization tool
Thanks to the new two-weapon combat system, we are able to detach pieces from enemies to add to our collection. I made sure to resell the parts I didn’t need right away at the end of the fight. The remaining ones are added to our inventory to then equip our Gunpla. We quickly realize that they are piling up. Be sure to visit the shop to get rid of some of them. After the second chapter, we can combine our additional pieces of equipment to reinforce the ones we want to use. If you do not sell everything, it will be useful for this equipment management option.
Personalization is one of the key elements of the game. More than two hundred and fifty basic kits offer players the opportunity to build their ideal Gunpla. You can customise your fighter using paint, wear treatments and decals to make it unique. A diorama mode will expose your Gunpla with a background and special effects. It’s up to you to create epic and dynamic scenes to share online. To be honest, this is not the place where I spent the most time but creative fans will be able to create unique scenes and share them with their friends.
Gundam Breaker 4, a fun game for fans
Overall, I had fun fighting robots, detaching their pieces of equipment and using them to improve my Gunpla. I realised that a lot of consideration was given to fans of the series. The main opponents appear on the field with their associated toy box. There are also videos in the lobby and a huge Gunpla on display in its center. The story is fun and our companions are endearing. For those looking for quick games, the additional game modes may interest them. Finally, the customization of our Gunpla and the ability to stage it in a diorama are clearly intended for Gundam fans but should not discourage new players.
Pros
- The story is fully playable in offline mode
- Several game modes to vary the games
- Extensive customization tool
- The voices of the characters add life to the adventure…
Cons
- …but we can’t talk. Too bad.
- A sometimes chaotic camera
- Empty environments with a generic look
- It is not possible to magnify the texts of the interface. It’s really very small.
