Arthur returns for a brand-new adventure

Ghosts ‘n Goblins Resurrection is a modern reboot of the iconic Ghosts ‘n Goblins series from Capcom. Both Ghosts ‘n Goblins and the sequel Ghouls ‘n Ghosts were never really known for their story and Ghosts ‘n Goblins Resurrection follows suit. The story is simple, Arthur returns and sets out on a quest to rescue the princess and restore peace to the land by making his way through the Demon Realm.

Seeing as this is an arcade action type game that’s main focus is on gameplay, the next to non-existent story really isn’t that big of a deal. The series is well known for its challenging gameplay, and much like the story line, Ghosts ‘n Goblins Resurrection falls right in line.

Classic gameplay with a few new additions

Without a doubt, if you’re a long-time fan of the series, then you will be right at home with Ghosts ‘n Goblins Resurrection. From the very beginning you are given a choice of two paths to take. One gives you a shorter playthrough. The other gives you the ability to go back to any stages you may have missed. Regardless of the path you choose, Arthur faces off against some pretty hideous foes. For example, you’ve got the Skeleton Murderer, Red Arremer and even monstrous bosses like Cyclops and Cerberus. And of course, Arthur’s long-time nemesis, the demon king Astaroth.

To make the game more accessible to a wider audience, Capcom has included four difficulty modes: Squire, Knight, Legend and Page. The all-new Page mode is literally a life saver in that you get unlimited lives and respawn exactly where you died. There are a total of eight different weapons you can acquire during the game that include the iconic Lance and new additions such as the Hammer and Spiked Ball.

Furthermore, the game features a skill tree of sorts known as the Umbral Tree. Here you can learn new magic spells and skills as well as upgrade them using the Umbral Bees you have earned. Again, keeping in tradition, once you beat the game the first time, Arthur’s journey is not really over. During the second playthrough, there are new challenges and transformed stages for you to fight your way through for a new experience.

Multiplayer co-op

Ghosts ‘n Goblins Resurrection offers you the ability, for the first time ever in the series, to play with a friend in a two-player local co-op mode. The second player can choose from one of three characters who can be swapped out on the fly. First, there is Barry who creates barriers for protection. Next, Kerry who carries Arthur through danger. Finally, Archie who creates bridges to cross.

Overall the co-op experience is a blast to play. I think it was a great idea for Capcom to add it. Having a friend helps tremendously with the game’s difficulty—especially on the second playthrough.

Cartoon storybook-like visuals

The presentation in Ghosts ‘n Goblins Resurrection is absolutely fantastic. The visuals look as if they are right out of a storybook. Each of the game’s characters and enemies are beautifully animated and feature limb motions that are overly exaggerated, similar to that of puppets on a string.

Additionally the backgrounds look and feel alive with special lighting effects that make some challenges even harder on purpose. Equally as impressive is the game’s soundtrack, at certain points it even pulls from the original game’s soundtrack.

Ghosts ‘n Goblins Resurrection is what long-time fans have been waiting for

Long-time fans of the series won’t be disappointed with Ghosts ‘n Goblins Resurrection. It offers up everything that made the originals great and then some. Gameplay is as challenging as ever. And, the skill tree is a welcomed addition that allows you to learn new magic and skills. Furthermore the co-op mode is something that I have been wishing for and helps alleviate some of the game’s difficulty.

Furthermore, the game’s visuals look stunning and the story-book like graphics are a perfect fit for the series. Arthur has never looked better! If you are new to the series, the added Page mode allows you to ease your way in and get familiar with the game’s challenges. Just be prepared to get your butt kicked time and time again.
