Astro Bot Rescue Mission

A journey that spans to the 4 corners of the galaxy

The story behind Astro Bot is rather simple. Your spaceship is attacked and as a result is shattered into pieces. Parts of the ship, including the Astro Bots inside, are flung to the four corners of the galaxy. You play as a giant robot who in fact controls Astro, the captain bot. Your mission is to rescue your 200+ friends over the 5 worlds and 20 levels in the game.

Although the story may seem pretty light, you won’t mind at all with all the fun playing the game you will have. Along the way you’ll participate in mini-missions of sorts and collect coins to purchase items in the shop on your ship.

Astro Bot Rescue Mission

Revolutionary VR gameplay

When I first played Astro Bot Rescue Mission, I was totally blown away. The last time I was this impressed was when I played Mario 64. It is a game that forever revolutionized gaming and I can say without a shadow of a doubt that Astro Bot is the next level of evolution in gameplay.

The game makes 100% use of the PSVR’s 360-degree view so that you can look everywhere. You can even turn and lean around corners to discover new items and areas. You use the DualShock 4 to punch, jump and hover your way across levels. It truly makes the game easy for any one to pick up and play.

Additionally, the touch pad on the DualShock 4 allows you to use the many different gadgets you come across such as a grappling hook, water gun, slingshot and ninja-stars. Each of these gadgets are useful in allow you to discover and rescue your robot friends. Speaking of which, whenever I was unsure where the next robot was to rescue all I had to do was stop and listen. If you listen carefully you can hear them yelling out for help.

Astro Bot Rescue Mission

Epic boss battles!

Your travels will take you across beaches, caverns, jungles and high up in the clouds. Many of the worlds contain levels that are of varying height. So, make sure to explore every nook and cranny. One of the things that makes a platforming game great are its bosses.

Let me tell you, Astro Bot Rescue Mission does not disappoint. The bosses are epic! While I didn’t find any one particular boss terribly difficult, they will definitely give you a run for your money and test your skills.

For example, the first boss is a gigantic mechanical monkey that uses his giant choppers to bite into the platform you are on to attack. You’ll use your gadgets to take out each of the bosses one by one and recover valuable pieces of your ship.

In addition to its fantastic gameplay, the presentation in Astro Bot Rescue Mission is simply amazing. The visuals are some of if not the best the PSVR has to offer and the worlds around you are bright and colourful. There are no words to explain the level of immersion that you feel when playing this game. You simply have to experience it for yourself to appreciate the masterpiece in which this game is.

To top it off, the music in Astro Bot is fantastic. It is done by none other than Kenneth Young, famous for his work in both Little Big Planet and Tearaway.

  1. When I first saw the title of this game, I thought it was a typo and that it was really an Astro Boy game. I got all excited. There was a small letdown when I realized I was wrong, but after reading more about the game it sounds really interesting. Maybe one day I will get a PS4 and a PSVR so I can try it out.
