Samsung announced new TVs and TV technology as part of a virtual CES 2021 presentation today. (Read all of Best Buy’s CES coverage here.) At this year’s consumer electronics show Samsung debuted several new models including a Neo QLED TV, Micro LED TV and new TVs in its “Lifestyle” category, which includes a newer, even thinner version of the popular Frame TV.

Samsung announces new TV technology: NEO QLED TV
Revealing what it dubs “a whole new display technology”, Samsung showed off its Neo QLED, which is part of Samsung’s flagship 8K (QN900A) set as well as the Samsung 4K (QN90A) models.
What does Neo QLED do?
Samsung’s sales pitch is that Neo QLED offers a “whole new level of picture vibrancy, reaching new heights in colour, contrast and black levels.” Neo QLED exists thanks to a new light source, Quantum Mini-LED.
In a media release, Samsung says, the company’s “2021 Neo QLED 8K features a new new Infinity One Design—a nearly bezel-less screen providing an even more immersive viewing experience in a sleek design and form factor.”
So you’ll find the Neo QLED technology in Samsung’s flagship QN900A and QN90A models.
What is MicroLED? It’s ‘The Wall’ but consumer-ready
In 2018, Samsung first introduced its MicroLED display as part of CES with “The Wall”— a literal wall-sized TV made up of a system of invisible and configurable panels that had to be installed professionally.
With the new 110” MicroLED, Samsung is about to make MicroLED technology available in a more traditional TV form factor for the first time, since since the new 110” MicroLED model is prefabricated as a single (albeit massive) panel. This technology obviously allows for TVs to be larger and thinner than ever before, while using an almost entirely bezel-less design, as seen below. Samsung Micro LED TV“Available in 110’’, 99’’, and smaller sizes by the end of the year, the new MICRO LED line uses micrometer-sized LED lights to eliminate the backlight and colour filters utilized in conventional displays. It is self-illuminating, producing stunningly lifelike colors and brightness through its 24 million individually controlled LEDs. And with a Monolith Design defined by over 99% screen-to-body ratio, all you will see is the breathtaking picture quality,” reads the news release.
Improved audio for thinner screens
Samsung also revealed its working to create better on-board audio in its thinner than ever TVs. With “Majestic Sound”, Samsung TVs like the Micro LED TV can still provide “5.1 channel sound with no external speaker—transforming any room into a luxurious home theater.”
“During the past year, we have witnessed the pivotal role technology played in helping us carry on with our lives and stay connected with each other,” said JH Han, President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics.
New 2021 Samsung Frame TV: thinner than ever
Samsung also showed off a new iteration of its “Lifestyle” TV. These new models will arrive at Best Buy in the near future and current models of the The Frame can be found here. The Frame is a unique and immensely popular TV set which is designed to blend in as realistic-looking artwork hanging on a gallery-quality picture-frame design when it’s not being used to watch 4K video. A new 2021 version of The Frame will keep the set’s unique art mode display form factor while now being about half as thin as previous models (I found that the original was already impossibly thin!).
New magnetic bezel/frame options have been added too including new colours and now a beveled or ‘modern’ looks.
The Frame’s Art Store has been updated, hosting about 1,400 “carefully curated pieces” and Samsung’s new AI-based auto-curation technology can even analyze your preferences to recommend artwork.
Since launching in 2017, Samsung says The Frame has sold over one million units.
The 2021 Frame joins The Serif (I-beam shaped TV on an easel, designed to look like gallery artwork or a standalone display as seen above), The Sero (a TV that displays in landscape or rotates to portrait framing), The Terrace (outdoor TV) and The Premiere (short throw laser projector).
Samsung announces new Premiere ultra-short throw projector
Samsung also won a CES Innovation award for its new Premiere ultra-short throw (UST) projector. The newly announced Samsung LSP9T is said to be the world’s first HDR10+ certified, ultra-short throw (UST) projector. Unlike traditional projectors which are set up at a distance or mounted to the ceiling, the Premiere can be positioned millimeters from the wall—and project a huge 130” image.
With triple laser technology, 4K picture quality, and vivid brightness, The Premiere is said to deliver “an immersive viewing experience”. It has built-in, multi-channel speakers for cinema-quality sound with Acoustic Beam technology.
