There will come a day when all domestic tasks will be discussed alongside statements like “we used to walk 10 kilometers to school in the snow, uphill ….” For example, in the not too distant future you’ll see the old style of vacuum in museums and have to explain to little children what they were used for. Times are changing thanks to the innovative technology produced by iRobot.
iRobot has been making robotic domestic servants for about 25 years now. Their latest wonder, the Roomba 980, is one giant leap toward space age vacuuming efficiency for your home. You don’t “do” vacuuming with the Roomba 980, it does the vacuuming—independently. You tell it to vacuum the floors and it does. You can even tell it to vacuum the floors on Wednesday and Fridays, and it will remember. It remembers a lot of things: the layout of your home, the areas it has already vacuumed and more. It has sophisticated sensors that allow it to map out a floor of your home for incredible vacuuming efficiency.
Here are just a few of its cool features:
- iAdapt 2.0 Navigation: while it follows a pattern to clean a whole level of your home, its sensors will enable it to negotiate around objects , stairs and drop-offs; it adapts its pattern to your home
- iRobot HOME app: forgot to vacuum? No problem. While you are still at the office you can use your smartphone to tell the Roomba 980 to start cleaning.
- Aeroforce cleaning system: it will automatically detect when it changes from a floor surface to carpet and boost the suction to provide the cleaner power needed to capture the dirt hidden in carpet fibers
- Recharge and Resume: (this amazes me!) when the Roomba detects that its battery is getting low, it will return to its charging station, and once its battery is charged it will go back to where it left off cleaning and continue.
I can’t wait until iRobot comes out with the laundry robot and the dishes robot. Until then we can enjoy the vacuuming robot. One lucky person may even win one from Best Buy.

Recharge and Resume: (this amazes me!) when the Roomba detects that its battery is getting low, it will return to its charging station, and once its battery is charged it will go back to where it left off cleaning and continue.
Thats awesome if am at work and the battery runs it I don’t have to worry at that the job will be half down.
The one feature I like is that it can be turned on from your smartphone while at work or out of the house. My all time favorite robots are Optimus Prime and BumbleBee from Transformers movies.
Recharge and resume. R2D2
The Aeroforce cleaning system which detects which kind of floor surface the vaccuum is on is my fav feature.
It’s hard not to like R2D2 as a robot, Wall-E is perhaps a bit cuter.
I love that I don’t have to watch it and keep it from falling down the stairs!
Favourite Roomba 980 feature? Navigatability!
Best Robot? Military Robots from the movie iRobot.
THIS! Cause I always forget to charge everything and get mad when it dies while I need it.
Best featue…iRobot Home app. Favorite robot…DATA from STNG, although he preferes the term “synthetic lifeform”
The recharge and resume feature amazes me.
I’m intrigued with the option / feature of being able to program the vacuum on certain times, specific days.
I would call it rombuddy.
My favourites robot is R2D2 – makes me think of a grown-up Roomba!
My favorite robot has to be Lt. Com DATA from Star Trek TNG…although he prefers the term “synthetic lifeform”
The feature I like is the Aeroforce cleaning system because it knows how much suction to use when cleaning wood flooring vs carpet and I have both!
My favorite robot would prefer to be called a human, but is actually an android! Data from Star Trek: TNG! He would make an excellent molly maid!!
Recharge a d resume is a cool feature.. the app sounds great too.
R2d2 – my son is Luc and my former pet Darth
My favorite feature would be the phone app for sure. I like the idea of being able to turn the machine on from work. This would work great for me especially, as I live in a one level condo and hate vacuuming the floors! I hope I win!!!! I’ve wanted one of these for over a year now. Congrats to the winner!
I like being able to have a vacuum that will work without me having to push it around. I’ve got a new baby at home so it would make my life MUCH easier with one less thing I personally have to do!
My favourite robot would definitely have to be Sonny from I, Robot! He was so likeable and cute, plus he could do everything us humans could do and more
I love everything about this cleaning system. With mobility limitations it would be like having a buddy to help around the house. My favourite feature I guess would be that it is programable to the floor plan so it won’t fall down the stairs or get stuck in the cupboard.
My favourite robot has to be the ever polite and patient CP30.
I like the automatic detection of floor type so that it can clean carpet more thoroughly.
My favourite robot from tv is Data from Star Trek.
The irobot app sounds like a great way to get the place cleaned up while away from home.
my fovourite robot is Mr data from Star trek next generation
I live the fact that is goes under beds and tables so i dont have to!
That it will know to go and recharge on its own
Short cicuit movie… Jonny 5…..love it!
To be able to use your smart phone to control the IRobot Roomba 980 from home is why I like it. With a push of a button from your phone, not only is it convenient but it also saves you time.
My favourite iRobot feature is Recharge and Resume; frankly this feature is awesome, because it automatically looks after itself and saves me time and hassel.
My favourite robot is Data (an android) from Star Trek… I know, geeky. LOL!
My favorite Robot is RoboCop. He is my hero!
Aeroforce cleaning system, R2D2
R2D2 second entry
My favourite robot is Rosie from The Jetsons!
I like the Aeroforce cleaning system because I have carpet, hardwood and tile on my main floor.
R2D2 is the best!
Recharge and resume is amazing! Have to go with a classic, R2D2 is the greatest robot.
Airforce Cleaning System is not only impressive but useful
WALL-E is the first robot that comes to mind.
The feature that detects when the battery is running low and to send itself to recharge!
Starting it from your smartphone is good too but if it did not recharge by itself..starting it with your smartphone away from home may mean the job might not be done when you get home if it didn’t have the low battery detecting feature.
DJ roomba (see parks and rec for reference) it is what I am doing for sure if I win.
And I must say R2D2 from Star Wars is still my favorite robot.
The recharge and resume feature. Fantastic!
Favorite robot…R2D2.
The coolest feature? Being able to sense stairs and drop-offs – after finding mine at the bottom of the stairs a couple of times I had to install a gate to keep it from becoming Wall-E food…
My favourite robot has to be the robot from Lost In Space. A clutzy, super strong, intelligent, quirky bucket of bolts that was never given a name, as far as I recall.
The feature where the robot will recharge itself and continue after would be incredible!
Gotta go with the classic Johny 5!
