I’m a huge fan of Starbucks Frappuccinos and I always head for those when it gets hot, but I know a lot of Tim Horton’s fans, and I was completely shocked the other day by the long line up for Tim Horton’s Iced Caps. It was 25 degrees in Vancouver and they were actually turning people away from the counter because they ran out of the popular drink.

That line-up got me thinking about making my own ice coffee drinks at home. After all, if you can make them at home you won’t have to worry about ever running out of your favourite cold drink.

After digging for some recipes, I’ve discovered you need two things in your kitchen to make a great icy cold coffee drink—a powerful blender and an espresso maker.

Why a powerful blender? A blender with a slower, less powerful motor than a 1400-watt blender just won’t crush the ice the way you need to. The espresso maker is so you can have the best blend of coffee to chill and use in your iced coffee drinks.

Now that you know what you need to get going, here are two recipes to replicate your favourite iced coffee drinks.

When you’re craving a frappuccino, nothing else will do. I love how they’ve come out with new flavours of the blended beverage, and you can use this recipe to make almost anything verison of the frappuccino you’d like. This recipe uses both a powerful blender and an espresso machine for the best coffee. Recipe from food.com.

Ingredients:

3 cups espresso coffee

34 cup sugar

4 cups milk

34 cup chocolate syrup

whipped cream, for topping

chocolate syrup, for topping

Directions

Make coffee, follow directions for your favourite brand of espresso roast coffee.

Mix coffee, still hot, and sugar in your mixer until sugar is dissolved.

Add milk and chocolate syrup and continue mixing, about one minute.

Pour mix into a sealable container for easy storage.

Store in fridge until ready to use (Note: Do not store any longer than you would milk).

To make drink, combine equal parts mix and ice in a blender and blend on high until smooth.

Pour into glasses.

Top each glass with whipped cream and drizzle with chocolate syrup.

Tim Horton’s Iced Cappuccino Recipe

iced-capp-recipe.png

Who in Canada hasn’t had an iced cap from Tim Horton’s? They’ve come out with some new flavours recently including chocolate and caramel, but the traditional iced cap is what keeps people coming back for more. Try this recipe to make your own iced caps at home: I found this recipe in Yahoo answers, and it’s pretty close to the real thing.

Ingredients:

4 cups milk
1 cup non-dairy coffee creamer (Tim’s uses 18% cream!)
2 tsp. vanilla
2 Tbsp. instant coffee
3 Tbsp. hot chocolate mix
1/4 cup cold milk

Directions

Heat the 4 cups of milk to boiling; remove from heat.

Add creamer, vanilla, instant coffee and hot chocolate mix; stir well. Pour mixture into a container with a lid; put into freezer and freeze until very firm, but slightly slushy.

Put mixture in a blender; while processing, add the 1/4 cup milk in small increments to mixture. Process until all is combined and nicely slushy.

I don’t know about you, but I’m more than ready for summer now that I’ve got a few great iced coffee recipes. Get your kitchen ready to make some too with these small kitchen appliances:

  1. I love Starbuck’s Mocha Frappuccino… its taste delicious I always atleast have 2 or 3 over a week… Thanks for sharing you tips I am gonna try to create mine… if thats happened it would be my Christmas Gift 🙂

  2. My coffee addiction is pretty severe, and while I always take the hot stuff black, in summer I have a bad habit of brewing a fresh pot, sticking it in the freezer for 30 mins, then taking it down with a modest yet notable dose of ice, sugar and milk.

I’ve tried to cut back on that summer sugar fix, but these recipes look too good to pass up. I can’t imagine the trouble I’ll be in if I get hooked on one of these in the comfort of my own home Smiley Very Happy

…wait, did somebody say fresh pots?

  3. I’m with you there @debaser17. I make my own cold brew in the summer too. Trust me, that frap recipe is really, really good, and I’ve been trying to recreate the caramel ribbon frap with pretty decent results. It doesn’t take a lot of time to make them either.
