Springtime is the best time to clear the clutter. Not only that, it’s a great time to freshen up your home décor. The good thing is that you don’t need to do a complete overhaul. Here are a few easy tricks to add a drastic impact on your space.
Ditch your white walls
Okay, maybe that’s extreme, but putting colourful patterned wallpaper on one wall of a room would be lit. (Yes, I’m trying to be cool with that term.) In all seriousness, the bolder the better. You could always paint a wall teal, but cool patterned wallpaper might make more of a statement. Although my first instinct would be to place it on a bare wall, you can also put it on the backdrop of your bookshelf or above the fireplace. Forget about hanging wallpaper from floor to ceiling; use it as a decorative panel on the wall (either the top half or the bottom) and then frame it with painted mouldings. I love this cobalt pattern by Nu Wallpaper for a bold and drastic. Or even this zig zag pattern which would be perfect in a nursery.
Add balance to an array of decorative pillows.
Sometimes all you need is a refresh of your couch. But who wants to buy another sofa? The trick is to add decorative pillows. It’d be really cool if you could match them with your new wallpaper, but if that isn’t an option, you have the freedom to work with patterns that complement its design. For instance, this blue diamond pillow would work with the cobalt wallpaper noted above. You can also balance all the bold coloured and/or patterned pillows with a neutral throw blanket. I love this one by St. Pierre, which gives off a warm and cosy vibe. I also love to mix with solid and pattern. As for pillow suggestion, I love this black and white tribal pattern, as well as this tropical themed style.
Why you don’t buy a plain rug
Did Aladdin ride on a beige rug? Nope. And he carried a genie that granted three wishes. My wish to you is not to go bland or neutral just to stay safe. Take note of a space’s colour scheme and harmonise with it. You can use a rug as the focal point of your room, and then paint your walls a hue that reflects one of its accent colours. I love this Impressions dark blue rug to complement the cobalt wallpaper and blue diamond pillows. My other favourite is this flora rug. Be aware of the size of the rug too. When it comes to a living room, your rug is the essence of the conversation area. Interior designers suggest that a rug should be large enough so that it can fill the front legs of any furniture pieces in the space. What do you think? Does your living room need a refresh on the rug?
