Installing a dash cam is one of many ways you can prepare for the upcoming change to daylight saving time (DST). On March 12th, at 2 AM we’ll be setting our clocks forward by an hour. Some people prefer daylight saving, but some people may experience adverse health effects, which can lead to an increased risk for everyone on the roads. A dash cam is an always-on protection for drivers enabling you to capture an accurate record of events in the event of an accident. Learn more about why a dash cam is good to have at this time of year, then enter this contest: we are giving away several dash cams from Garmin, Nextbase, and Thinkware.

Can a DST time change be harmful to you

The simple answer to this question appears to be yes. There have been many studies reporting adverse health effects associated with the time change such as: a 24% higher risk of heart attacks, a 6% spike in fatal car accidents, and an 8% increase in strokes. However, making our day out of sync with natural light by one hour with DST was supposed to be good for the country as a whole, with expected energy savings due to a reduced reliance on electric lighting. Do the benefits of DST compensate for the costs?

To be clear, there is research showing some benefits of DST. For example, some studies report that crime rates decrease as a result of the time change. Also, there are claims that pedestrian accidents decrease between dawn and dusk with DST implemented. However, the initial justification for DST, energy savings, is no longer supported by the evidence; our reliance on technology today (phones, laptops, etc) means we use the same amount of energy regardless of DST. Importantly, you may assert that the costs outweigh the benefits if someone happens to collide with your car, on a road or even while it is parked, right after DST takes effect.

How can you protect yourself and your family during the DST transition

The world is not getting rid of DST anytime soon so the best we can do is prepare. Firstly, know the day of the change. On March 12th at 2 AM be ready to change clocks on non-connected devices. Many smart devices, like smartphones, will be automatically updated. Our bodies,  however, will not be auto updated. You and I will take time to adjust. You might notice work colleagues a little more distracted, or a little sleepier. Some people are more challenged by the change than others.

A dash cam is one way to protect yourself. As I said, you might not be affected by the time change but many other people are. If you are involved in an accident, you’ll be glad to have a dash cam in your vehicle. A dash cam will capture an accurate record of events leading up to the accident. Fault is often contested in such situations, but you will be more likely able to prove your innocence with a video record of events. They are easy to install, easy to use, and often indisputable when used for a defence!

Select from an amazing selection of Dash Cam brands

Best Buy has a huge range of dash cams. There come from a variety of brands, and have a variety features. At their simplest, a dash cam may be just a tiny box pointing forward and will record video onto an SD card that must be removed to access the footage. At their most complex, they capture footage in front, behind, and in the car, when the car is running or not running, and send the footage to the cloud so you can access it on any mobile device. Some dash cams even have a display so you can see what it is capturing in real time.

In this contest, we are giving away some of the newest dash cams, complete with amazing features, from three of the top dash cam brands: Garmin, Nextbase, and Thinkware. We have reviewed many dash cams on the Best Buy blog including some of the ones that we are giving away in this contest. I encourage you to read our articles to learn more about some of their features so you can decide what you want in your next dash cam. Here are the models we are giving away in this contest. 1. Two must have features I’m looking for are 1) the highest resolution for clear images (1080p or 4K), and 2) good night vision.

  2. I would say night vision and time lapse would be the two features I would want when looking for a dash cam! 😉

  3. So many interesting must haves, but I would want parked surveillance as well as the thermal protection when the car dash cam is in extremely cold weather conditions.

  4. The two features I look for most in a dash cam are at least 1080p for high quality resolution and one that includes both front and rear cameras!

  5. Built-in GPS antenna tracks the speed, time, and route history of your vehicle, and enables the dash cam to alert you of upcoming red light cameras and speed cameras

5GHz Wi-Fi connectivity makes it easy to send footage direction to a compatible iOS or Android smartphone with the Thinkware Cloud mobile app
