I’m a long-time user of Dyson vacuums and have always loved their functionality, versatility, and style. Needless to say, when I heard there was a Dyson vacuum with laser technology (seriously!), the Dyson V15 Detect Complete cordless stick vacuum, I just had to try it out and see what all the fuss was about. Is it just pure “cool factor” or is there something to this? I unpacked a brand-new vacuum, charged it up, and went on my way to find out.
What is the Dyson V15 Detect Complete cordless stick vacuum?
The latest in Dyson’s growing line of cordless stick vacuums, the Dyson V15 Detect Complete features the same powerful motor for which Dyson has become known along with Root Cyclone technology that works to pick up dirt and debris from virtually any surface, with the right brush attachment. Indeed, it comes with several to suit different surfaces, but the most interesting is the Laser Slim Fluffy cleaner hand designed for hard floors (more on this below).
What sets the Dyson V15 Detect Complete apart from the Dyson V15 Detect you might see elsewhere is that it’s an exclusive to Best Buy option that includes two swappable battery packs so you can get up to two hours of cleaning per charge using one after the other.
Key specs of the Dyson V15 Detect Complete cordless stick vacuum
- The motor spins at up to 125,000 RPM and delivers 230AW of suction to provide a deep clean
- The Piezo sensor technology grabs and counts dust particles to adjust for the perfect clean
- Root Cyclone technology works by using 14 scrolled cyclones that generate forces as powerful as 100,000G to capture even the tiniest, microscopic bits of dust.
- The Slim Fluffy cleaner head sets it apart, featuring soft nylon and anti-static carbon fibre filaments that work to remove dust from hard floors and narrow gaps, such as between floorboards and under furniture.
- A five-stage filtration system traps and seals 99.99% of microscopic particles that are as tiny as 0.3 microns in size, and with HEPA filtration of 99.97%, down to 0.1 microns.
- Dyson’s DLS technology found in the High Torque cleaner heads monitors the resistance of the brush bar 360 times per second, adapting to any type of floor surface without you having to swap among brush heads.
- Choose from three cleaning modes: Auto that will intelligently adapt to the surface; Eco Mode for longer run times and less intense cleans; and Boost Mode for intensive cleaning after a mess or spill.
- LCD displays how much dirt has been sucked up to confirm a deep clean
- Anti-hairwrap technology and de-tangling comb automatically clears hair from the brush bar; while the hair screw tool with an anti-tangle conical brush bar spirals hair off the brush and into the bin
Using the Dyson V15 Detect Complete and the Slim Fluffy brush head
As someone who is already familiar with Dyson cordless vacuums, I was already confident in how easy it would be to set up. While I did not mount it since I’m using a review sample, the mount is identical to the one I have in my home, which is super easy to remove and position the vacuum back in place. As expected, all pieces snap together easily and can be removed and swapped as needed depending on the surface you want to clean.
The brush heads all work wonderfully well, but the one I was most excited to try was the Slim Fluffy brush that works with the lasers.
My first impression was an overwhelming “wow.” You get the best effect by turning off the lights, at which point the green laser light that emits from the brush head illuminates dirt you didn’t even know was there, and bigger pieces you did. The LCD at the top and piezo sensor gives you detailed data on how many particles are being picked up as you push the vacuum back and forth along with a graphing of the size of debris so you can see just how many tiny particles are being sucked into the bin from between your floorboards or specs of dust that are wedged between kitchen tiles. (Note that this brush head only works with floors, not carpeting). This is a neat feature but I really didn’t know how to interpret all the data and I’m not sure what I’d do with it anyway. If anything, it’s wonderful for dramatic effect and to increase your level of satisfaction that you’re cleaning tons and tons of dirt.
Indeed, the best word to use to describe the Slim Fluffy brush head is “satisfying.” Sometimes, you feel like you’re aimlessly pushing a vacuum back and forth and not sure if it’s doing much. Here, you get visual proof that it is.
A more useful piece of information on the screen is the countdown timer for the battery, which gives you an idea of how much cleaning time you have left instead of the vacuuming dying right when you’re doing that final quadrant of the bedroom floor. I also love that if there’s an issue with the vacuum, a message will appear on the screen to tell you the suction is blocked, for example, so you can check for a piece of debris that’s stuck in the cleaner head or the wand.
Even with the lights on, you can see what’s being picked up. But a lights-off clean is the best way to ensure you’re picking up every bit of dirt. Because the brush head is nice and slim, it easily fits in hard-to-reach spots. It also pivots and turns with ease: I had no issues getting it all around the cupboards, stove, and dishwasher in my kitchen as well as around chair legs in the dining room.
As if the review gods were looking down upon me, right when I was working on this review, my 9-year-old opened a package of crackers while making his summer camp lunch and cheddar cracker bunnies went flying all over the kitchen floor. After picking up the larger pieces, I handed him the vacuum to give it a try. He was blown away by how well it worked as well as how easy it was to twist and turn as needed. Indeed, the Slim Fluffy brush head makes it more likely your kids will want to vacuum: have them take it up to their bedrooms, turns the lights off, vacuum, and analyze the numbers on the screen. Once done, you can inspect to see that they’ve done a sufficient clean.
Emptying the bin is a much more pleasant process than with my several-years-old Dyson cordless stick vacuum: push down on the bottom and the entire bin retracts, emptying the dust, dirt, and debris right into the garbage. With the old model I have, only the bottom cover would open and I would have to shake and sometimes coax bundles or hair or debris out of the chamber, so this is a really appreciated feature.
Bottom line
I have used a lot of Dyson vacuums in my time and the Dyson V15 Detect Complete is by far my favorite. It offers an incredibly compact package with tons of easily swappable cleaning brush heads to tackle just about any job. You can even use it handheld to suck up dirt from the car upholstery, vacuum the blinds or drapes, or give your mattress a clean.
The long battery life along with the extra battery pack could be a lifesaver and makes this Dyson cordless vacuum a viable option for cleaning the entire home. I really can’t see a reason for having a canister vacuum with this versatile appliance and the extra battery pack.
But it’s truly the Slim Fluffy brush head that makes a major difference. Admittedly, I fully expected that the feature would be more of a novelty than anything else. But there really is value in using it. I suspect that kids would actually enjoy vacuuming if they could use this brush head and do it in the dark. Any appliance that can convince kids to clean is a winner in my books!
