KitchenAid 5 Door Refrigerator Review

There are so many great refrigerators out right now that choosing one can be really difficult. Do you want a French door fridge or side by side? Should you choose traditional stainless steel or black stainless? Can you mix and match appliance brands? It’s a lot to take in, so it’s pretty amazing when you see a fridge that ticks all your boxes. For me, that fridge was the KitchenAid 5 Door refrigerator.

The KitchenAid KRMF706EBS French door refrigerator is a 36-inch fridge with 25.8 cu. ft. of interior space. I choose black stainless steel for the finish. It has more than enough room to store fresh and frozen food for my family of six, but what I really love are the soft-close storage drawers and the three-level freezer.

After using this fridge for 4 months, here are my thoughts on the KitchenAid 5 Door refrigerator.

Appearance and features of the KitchenAid 5 door refrigerator

The KitchenAid KRMF706EBS French door refrigerator measures 36 inches (91.44 cm) x 70.12 inches (178.1 cm) x 36.14 inches (92.07 cm). It has 25.8 cu. ft. total capacity inside, with 18.15 cu. ft. in the refrigerator compartment and 7.61 cu. ft. of freezer space.

Bottom line: it’s a big fridge, but it’s well worth the square footage it takes up in your kitchen. After having a counter depth fridge I struggled to organize, the storage space inside this fridge makes me a bit giddy.

  • 5-door fridge has two soft-close drawers with temperature controls to store deli meat, cheese, drinks, or to marinate food
  • 3-tier freezer drawer gives you space to fully organize frozen foods
  • Adjustable interior shelves and side bins give you ample space to organize fresh food
  • Dedicated herb storage bin keeps herbs fresh by storing stems in water
  • Measured Water Fill feature gives you preprogrammed amounts of water in ounces, cups, or liters
  • In-door ice system gives you ice on the door and lets you remove the ice bucket if you’d like to empty it out
  • Shelves are spill-resistant and have SatinGlide rollers so they pull out smoothly
  • LED lighting throughout the fridge will light up gradually when you open the door
  • Features Preserva Food Care system to keep fridge and freezer cooling separate
  • FreshFlow air filter reduces food odours
  • Available in black stainless steel finish or stainless steel and is fingerprint resistant

KitchenAid 5 Door French Door fridge

Review of the KitchenAid KRMF706EBS French door refrigerator

My refrigerator was on its last legs when I started looking for a new model. While I loved the built-in look of my counter depth fridge, I felt it didn’t give me enough internal space to organize food. I love to have my bottles line up on shelves, love to have a space to store wine, and it’s a huge time saver to have room in the freezer to organize the popsicles and other treats without having to dig for them.

After using the KitchenAid 5 Door Refrigerator for a few months, here are the things I’m most impressed with.

 KitchenAid Fridge drawers

Soft-close front drawers

The first thing you’ll notice about the KitchenAid 5 Door refrigerator is the front drawers. I’ve never seen drawers like that on a fridge before.

There are temperature controls on one of the drawers, and those temperature controls let you adjust the temperature based on what you are storing. You can choose deli meat, drinks, cheese, fish, beverages, or marinate. You just have to tap the menu and you can choose which one you’d like to use.

I store deli meat and cheese in one drawer and beverages in the other. My kids eat so many sandwiches that having an easy-access deli drawer has been a revelation for me. I put everything they need inside that drawer, and as soon as they say the word ‘sandwich’ I’m already pointing at the fridge drawer.

The other drawer in the KitchenAid 5 door refrigerator is intended for produce, but I like using interior drawers for fruits and vegetables so I use that drawer for drinks. Having a drawer dedicated to beverages gives my kids a quick way to grab a drink without opening up the main compartment of the fridge. I also love that all drinks are organized in one spot, so you don’t have to hunt around the fridge to find one.

Both drawers are soft-close, and I’m a huge fan of this feature. You just push gently and the drawers glide close. If something is blocking them and they don’t fully close, the alarm on the fridge goes off.

Adjustable interior shelves and LED lights

The first time I plugged in the KitchenAid 5 Door refrigerator and opened the doors, I was blown away by the interior lights. They grow brighter gradually so you have a chance to adjust your eyes to the light. Once they are on they completely illuminate the inside of the fridge. There isn’t a corner you can’t see into thanks to those lights, and there are even lights underneath one of the shelves.

The shelves are adjustable, and I’m still playing with the configuration to best suit the food I store. One of the shelves slides back to create a half shelf, and that gives you room for bulky items like milk jugs. I store milk and other tall items on the shelf underneath my folded back shelf, and on the top I store wine. It’s a pretty efficient system.

The door storage is great for condiments, and there is space on both sides to store big and small items. I love the stainless steel trim on the shelves and door storage, and it’s easy to pull everything out and clean it when you need to.

The shelves are also spill-resistant, and if you’ve ever spilled milk or juice in your fridge you’ll understand me when I say that this is a great feature. The shelves stopped the liquid from dripping down into the rest of the fridge.

Store more in the 3-tier bottom freezer

Everyone with kids, and I mean everyone, should have access to a three-tier bottom freezer. Instead of digging into the bottom of your freezer to look for chicken, steak, or a popsicle on a hot day, you have three tiers of storage. The shelves glide in and out easily.

I organize the shelves depending on what I have in the freezer, but I usually put frozen meat and vegetables on the bottom and snacks on the top two shelves. There is a compartment on the door of the freezer for pizza storage. It lets you store your pizza upright instead of flat, and that keeps your pizza from getting smashed in the freezer.

I have stored frozen pizza in the upright pizza storage and it fits a 13-inch pizza perfectly. Because my boys don’t leave a pizza uneaten for every long I also use that space for frozen fruit or balls of frozen pizza dough.

Measured water and ice

I’ve never had a fridge with water and ice on the door, and I was prepared to love it. What I didn’t expect is how amazing it would be to have measured water. The KitchenAid 5 Door refrigerator lets you choose how much water you’d like to pour, so you can tap 1 cup, 1 1/4 cup, 1 1/2 cup, and so on until you get to the amount you’d like.

Once you’ve selected your water you just tap and the water will pour out in that exact amount. It’s amazing. I don’t know how many times I’ve put the water there, walked away, and come back for it. It’s great for cooking and I use it to measure out water for baking too.

The ice maker on the KitchenAid 5 Door refrigerator is pretty amazing too. You just tap for ice or you can go inside the fridge and open the ice maker on the door. You can choose crushed or cubes. The crushed ice tends to be a little messy when dispensing, but you can fix that by holding your cup closer to the top of the dispenser.

It has a very slim profile so it doesn’t take up shelf space, and you can remove the ice bucket if you want to use a lot of ice for your blender or for a party.

A few other must-mention features on the KitchenAid 5 door refrigerator

The KitchenAid 5 Door refrigerator has two main features to keep your food fresh: the Preserva Food Care system and the FreshFlow air filter. The FreshFlow air filter removes food odours, and if you’ve ever had icy corners in the back of your fridge and a frozen-over freezer, you’ll love having the Preserva Food Care System on board. It has two independent cooling systems for the freezer and fridge, and they work separately so everything you put inside stays at the proper temperature.

One of the other must-mention features on the KitchenAid 5 door refrigerator is the herb storage. It’s a long plastic container that is as wide as the fridge, and you can store fresh herbs inside of it. The best part is you can keep the herb tips in water so they stay fresh for longer.

Refrigerator delivery and set up

I bought my new refrigerator from the Best Buy in Langley, BC. We have our own truck so we brought it home ourselves, but most people choose delivery and set up so they can be sure their fridge is working properly as soon as it arrives home.

If you are ordering your fridge online you’ll receive a phone call from Geek Squad’s Appliance Specialists to walk you through everything you need to know about how your fridge will be delivered and see if you require any additional set up like water line install. You can also opt to have your old refrigerator taken away for recycling.

For delivery, the number one tip I can give you is to measure, measure, measure. You should measure the spot in your kitchen where the fridge will go so you know it will fit, you should measure any doorways you have going into your kitchen so you are sure your fridge will fit through the doorway, and you should measure your entry doorway so you know you can fit your fridge through your entry.

Should you choose the KitchenAid KRMF706EBS French door refrigerator?

The KitchenAid 5 door refrigerator has been a huge hit with my family, and it never fails to impress anyone who comes in my kitchen. I love the black stainless steel finish. It’s muted compared to standard stainless steel, and it’s fingerprint resistant so I’m not always wiping it down. The stainless steel handles are a nice touch too. I also love the in-door ice machine; and, the measured water is such a timer saver.

The three-tier freezer storage and the soft close drawers on the door are fantastic. They save energy and keep the food cold because my kids aren’t standing in front of the door searching for the food they want. Everything in the fridge is organized, and I really believe it’s saved me money on groceries because I don’t double-buy anymore. Now I can just look in the fridge and know at a glance what is missing, and there is nothing hiding in the corners that I missed.

It’s roomy, it’s well laid out, and the LED lighting and chrome accents give it a luxurious look. At the four-month mark everything in the fridge is running great. I couldn’t be happier with this fridge, and if I ever have an issue  I’ll update my review.

You can find the KitchenAid 5 Door Refrigerator in stainless steel and black stainless steel on Best Buy right now.

  1. Well thought out refrigerator BUT if it’s design and technology is based on it’s KFIS model’s, on mine, be prepared for frustrating problems with ice making, and just 6 years later main control board issues. Suggested that the main board and power supply board be replaced at over $ 1000 dollar cost.

Opt for longest extended warranty available.

Needless to say, my KFIS is on its way to the junk yard , I opted for a Bosch frig to replace it.
