2021 marks the 30th anniversary of Sonic the Hedgehog. And, to help celebrate, Sega held a livestream event called Sonic Central. During the event, Sega unveiled new games including Sonic Colors: Ultimate, Sonic Origins, Olympic Games Tokyo 2020: The Official Video Game and teased a new Sonic Team game.
Let’s break down the news and take a look at the new Sonic games announced!
Sonic Colors: Ultimate
Sonic Colors: Ultimate, a platform action-adventure game, is a remaster of the beloved 2010 platformer, Sonic Colors. Developed by Blind Squirrel Entertainment, Sonic Colors: Ultimate features stunning upscaled visuals, additional features, a new mode, and improved gameplay enhancements. The evil Dr. Eggman has built a gigantic interstellar amusement park filled with rides and colourful attractions, powered by a captured alien race called Wisps.
It’s rumoured that the Wisps possess mystical powers that can be harnessed to grant special abilities. And, in Sonic Colors: Ultimate you’ll explore 6 colourful worlds using Sonic’s lightning speed to free the Wisps and learn the secrets of their amazing powers.
Sonic Colors: Ultimate is set to release on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC on September 7, 2021 and is coming soon to Best Buy Canada.
In addition to Sonic Colors: Ultimate, Sega revealed several other Sonic related games. Long time Sonic fans will be happy to know that Sega is working on a new Sonic compilation that includes Sonic the Hedgehog 1, 2, Sonic 3 & Knuckles and Sonic CD. Sonic Origins, a collection of platform action-adventure games, is coming soon to Best Buy Canada.
Next, Sega briefly teased a brand new game in the next flagship Sonic title from Sonic Team, the same team that brought us Sonic Generations and Sonic Forces. The new Sonic Team game is expected to launch in 2022 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4 and Xbox One and is coming soon to Best Buy Canada.
Finally, Sega revealed that the recently announced Olympic Games Tokyo 2020: The Official Video Game, a sports simulation game, will have a Sonic costume. Gamers can dress up their Avatars as Sonic and compete across 18 Olympic events including soccer, basketball, tennis and more. Olympic Games Tokyo 2020: The Official Video Game launches June 22, 2021 and is coming soon to Best Buy Canada. It will launch on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Steam and Stadia.

Even though I like the Sonic games of yesteryear, I’m more interested in what developers can come up with that’s new instead of a remaster/reboot of a classic title.
Here’s hoping it’ll be great!
Sonic games have had a really tumultuous history when it comes to quality, especially recently, so I think it is smart of Sega to remaster the games that everyone fondly remembers.
Sonic Colors is probably considered to be one of the best Sonic games of the past couple decades, but it was limited to the Wii and the DS, preventing a lot of people from playing it. With Colors being released on next-gen consoles in HD for the first time, I can see a lot of people buying this game, potentially providing Sega with some goodwill for the next Sonic games, helping to reinvigorate the franchise. The same goes for Sonic 1, 2, 3, Knuckles and CD; people have positive memories of these games and they can help to remind people why this franchise made it out of the 90s when the vast majority of other mascot led games did not.
Best Buy you are the best and this remake of sonic colors is go to be amazing
I’ve always liked Sonic the character more than I have enjoyed the games. It’s hard for me to keep track of the levels and know that I’m not going to fall into spikes or something.
I do want to like the games though. That Sonic Origins collection sounds interesting.
Thanks Jon, I like eagerly await getting more info on these games as we get closer to the release!
