Reimaging Prey on current consoles and PC

Longtime gamers may know about or have played the original Prey, which released on Xbox 360 and PC over 10 years ago, but this newest incarnation is neither a sequel nor a remake. It’s a complete imagining of the IP, with no ties to the original, all though there will be common elements such as both taking place on a space station crawling with fearsome alien creatures.

Prey is being built using CryEngine, the powerful game engine used in titles like Evolve, Ryse: Son of Rome, and the Crysis series. From the trailers we’ve seen so far, the graphics in Prey look phenomenal and the gameplay appears fast and smooth. In addition to the first-person shooter elements, the game will feature deep narration, the freedom to approach situations in many unique ways, and light RPG elements. These inclusions come as no surprise given that Prey is developed by Arkane Studios, the same team that gave us last year’s narrative- and gameplay-rich Dishonored 2.

Play as Morgan Yu in the year 2032

In Prey, you’ll play as Morgan Yu, a (male or female—you can choose) test subject undergoing genetic modification using alien DNA. The game will take place onboard the Talos I, a space station abandoned in the 60s after it was overrun by hostile alien species, known collectively as the Typhon. The year is now 2032, and Talos I is under the control of TranStar, a cash-rich organization that converted the derelict station into an extravagant and luxurious research station focused on studying ways to enhance human physiology using Typhon genetic material. Somehow it appears the Typhon have broken out of containment, and have once again spread throughout the space station. As Yu, you’ll wake up onboard this nightmarish ship and find yourself being hunted by this alien force.
