Sonos announces new Sonos Arc
Meet the new Sonos Arc, a premium sound bar with 3D sound and Dolby Atmos. Arc builds on Sonos’ industry-leading innovations in home theater, with software-driven audio that Sonos says immerses listeners in dramatic detail, crystal clear dialogue and impressive bass.
Upgrades to Sonos Sub and Sonos Five
Alongside the brand new Arc, Sonos has unveiled an upgraded Sonos Sub Generation 3 and and upgraded Sonos Five. Sub and Five will keep the same iconic design and premium sound experiences customers have come to know from these products, but they feature updated guts, which are set to improve speed and enhance internal memory.
Arc, Sub and Five are available for pre-order beginning today and will be available globally starting June 10.
Sonos to launch all new S2 app
Sonos Arc, Five, and the generation 3 Sub will run exclusively on a new and soon-to-be-launched Sonos app, dubbed ‘S2’ which will launch June 8, 2020. Sonos S2 enables new experiences for customers, including support for higher resolution audio, an improved design, and more personalization including saved room groups. User interface updates to the new app make it even easier for you to search for content, control sound, and personalize your experience with new features, starting with saved room groups.
What sets Sonos Arc apart?
Sonos Arc is meant to compete in the ultra high end audio market. It’s a larger sound bar, meant for use with larger TVs, and it has a much more rounded appearance. An optional special mounting bar gives you seamless installation, and more; the mounting bar has special sensors built into it that allows Sonos Arc to detect its installation and surroundings to automatically calibrate it for best sound based on its placement.
Sonos Arc will also feature technology that customers may already be familiar with, including Speech Enhancement for improved dialogue, and Night Mode, which tones down raucous action audio so you won’t disturb the whole house.
A simple connection through HDMI eARC or ARC keeps set-up simple. Built on Sonos’ next generation S2 software platform, you won’t need an extra remote control cluttering up the room: you’ll be able to control Arc from the new Sonos app, using an existing TV remote, with your voice using Amazon Alexa or the Google Assistant, and using Apple AirPlay 2.

Arc’s grille hides 11 high-performance drivers, including two that are upward firing for 3D audio and overhead channels, as well as two drivers designed to point sideways to also spread sound out to the edges of your viewing area.
Arc adjusts its sound profile through software, based on the home theater set-up and what’s playing, whether stereo, Dolby Digital 5.1, or Dolby Atmos. There’s also been an update to Sonos’ Trueplay tuning technology, whoich lets you adjust Arc’s acoustic profile based on the room.
How does Sonos Arc differ from Sonos Playbar, Playbase and Beam?
For starters, Playbar and Playbase are being retired. Sonos will move forward in the home theatre audio category with just the compact and budget-friendly Sonos Beam, and the premium Sonos Arc. Beam is an excellent choice for smaller TVs and smaller spaces where you don’t have space for a full size sound bar or home theatre set up. Arc is the one to buy if you’re looking for the best in high end sound for your larger 4K and 8K TV.
