ring floodlight cam 2017

[Editor’s note: the Ring Floodlight Cam is now available for pre-order from Best Buy]

CES 2017 has been demoing some pretty amazing devices over the past few days, but sometimes there’s a device that just speaks to you the second you see it; something that is everything you never knew you always needed, and for me that something is the Ring Floodlight Cam.

Just announced at CES 2017, the Ring Floodlight Cam is a one-of-a-kind security camera and floodlight, all in one. If you’ve ever had a motion-activated floodlight outside your home, you know that they’re really handy for lighting up dark areas or alerting you to when someone is out there. Unfortunately that’s about all they’re good for, and if someone isn’t deterred by lights, they’re not going to leave your yard.

Talk to someone in your yard, even when you’re not home

floodlightcamThe Ring Floodlight Cam lets you use that floodlight to take action over what’s happening in your yard. It will light up dark areas where you’d like to shine a spot light, and you can watch over everything via an HD 1080p video camera that’s built right in.

Connected via Wi-Fi, the Ring Floodlight Cam is easy for anyone to install and has a 100dB siren, 270-degree motion detection, night vision, and smart LED lights. Because it has the loudest speaker on any outdoor camera, if someone comes into your yard you can use the audio to talk and/or yell at them if someone isn’t supposed to be there. If they don’t listen, just hit the siren and I’m guessing they’ll be on their way.

The Ring Floodlight Cam works with your existing Ring app, so if you already have a Ring doorbell you can just add your Ring Floodlight Cam to the app. It also works with your existing floodlight wiring, and you can replace your old floodlight with your Ring Floodlight and you’re good to go.

Replace your standard floodlight with the Ring Floodlight Cam

ring-floodlight-cameraThere are a lot of different reasons why the Ring Floodlight Cam is going to appeal to a lot of people, but reducing crime is one of the biggest. I’ve often been glad to have floodlights out in my yard because, when they go off, I can see it and go out there and take a look. But as far as actual security? A floodlight’s effectiveness depends on whether someone is deterred by light.

When someone walks into a yard with a Ring Floodlight Cam, the light will turn on and you’ll receive a notification on your smartphone that someone is out there. You can tune in to a live feed, and it will also record to the Cloud and save any clips for you.

What happens next is up to you, but if I were to see someone in my yard that wasn’t supposed to be there, and it’s happened before, I’d get on the microphone, yell at them until they leave, and hit that siren until they head out of the gate. That would also be a good time to call the police, but the bonus is that you can take action while you’re waiting for them to arrive.

Ring Floodlight Cam lets you take control of your outdoor security in a way you never could before, and I’m betting that this camera is going to be a huge deal in 2017. I know I’m going to be first in line when it hits the shelves of Best Buy.

  1. Its now May. This has been available for some time now in the US. When we see it available here in Canada. Any updates?

  2. It didn’t mention if the saving of the video to the cloud was a subscription based money-grab or if you can save it to your own device.

    • 3$ a month or 30$ a year which is far from a money grab for unlimited storage.

Local recording is flawed for security, should always be in the cloud. You could download the windows 10 app and capture the screen all day, it will pop up video automatically if you have the app open, you don’t need a subscription for live video. Same goes with nest cams, you can record the live stream with screen capture software on a PC. Now that I think of it, you can screen capture any IP camera and bypass a subscription if you are cheap.

Anyways I’m looking forward to the Ring floodlight to go on sale at bestbuy to go with my ring door bell, 2 indoor nest cams, 1 outdoor nest cam.
