Lightsabers and flying cars might not exist yet, but you have to admit, science fiction gets it right sometimes. Just look at the smart home. Today, building a hi-tech smart home is no longer just a far-fetched, futuristic imagining of a visionary storyteller. And Google and Nest are spearheading the drive to make every home at least a little smarter.

Nest thermostats, for example, have opened up new possibilities for how smart home tech can be integrated together. And, since Google acquired Nest in 2014, Google’s products work seamlessly within the Nest framework for a perfectly coordinated symphony of home convenience, security, and energy efficiency.

Read on to learn how smartening up your living space can enrich you and your family’s life, and then enter this contest for a chance at winning the grand prize, which includes enough goodies to build your own domestic ecosystem. There are also second and third place prizes to be won!

A snapshot of smarter living with Nest and Google

If you’re a long time reader of the Best Buy Canada Blog, I’m sure you’ve read a lot about smart home technology by now in articles such as Leonard Bond’s comprehensive breakdown of Works with Nest, or Elliot Chun’s smart home series. But, if you’re still wondering what exactly a smart home is and how it can complement your day-to-day life, allow me to paint a picture of what life can be like in an AI-enabled home. And by simply entering this contest, living in a tech-enhanced home could soon be your reality:

Nest Smart Learning Thermostat

You pull up the driveway at the same time you do every day. It’s late Fall and Jack Frost is starting to make his presence felt with cold winds that let you know that it’s the beginning of a long winter. You hurry to the front door to escape the icy chill and step into cozy comfort. Your energy-efficient Nest Thermostat has learned what time you usually come home and turned itself on a few minutes before you arrive—no more waiting for cold rooms to heat up!

Voice-controlled Google Home answers questions, plays your music, and controls other smart devices, including Nest

As soon as you’ve settled in, you go to the kitchen to get dinner ready. It’s cheat day, you’re craving carbs, and everyone in the family loves Italian food, so you ask your voice-activated Google Home to tell you about a recipe for a tasty pasta dish, request some good cooking music, and set a timer to ensure your pasta is perfectly al dente, all without lifting a finger.

Just as dinner is ready to serve, your smartphone vibrates with a notification: your Nest Cam IQ in the front yard has detected someone you know in the driveway. Seconds later, your Nest Hello video doorbell rings. It uses facial recognition to identify the person and transmits the message to Google Home to tell you that your mother is at the door.

As you take your mother’s coat, your partner arrives with your hungry toddler fresh out of daycare. The four of you sit down to dinner and you ask Google to dim the lights and play some nice background music. After dinner, you and your other half head out to the movie theatre for date night while your little one and Grandma stay in to watch a Disney classic.

Nest Cam IQ records in 1080p and boasts a wide-angle lens to capture the entire room

At the theatre, before the movie begins, that familiar feeling of separation anxiety hits you right on time, and you wonder if everything is okay at home. Plus, you’ve also got a niggling feeling that you left the cooker on. With Nest Cams in the nursery, living room, and kitchen, as well as outside in the front and back yards, you open the Nest App to view the Full HD live feed on your smartphone.

While baby plays happily in the living room, you can see Grandma is reading nearby with a blanket over her shoulders. You adjust the room’s temperature from your phone so they’ll be nice and cozy. Then you switch over to your kitchen Nest Cam. It has a perfect view of the entire room with its wide angle lens, and you zoom in on your range. It’s off. Priceless peace of mind! Now, you can relax.

This scenario only scratches the surface of how a smart home ecosystem can make your life more convenient. Nest and Google have been working tirelessly to make premium smart home products accessible to everyone. Installation is a doddle, and, as you can see, every individual item works together and can be controlled with your voice or from an app on your smartphone. There’s lots of goodies to be won in this contest, and if you’re wondering what other gear you’ll need to make a smart home platform work seamlessly in your house or apartment, remember this general rule of thumb: If you have a smartphone, you can have a smart home. It’s as simple as that.

  1. The Nest thermostat since we just bought a new house and it should yield the most energy savings. Living in a condo, you’re pretty much stuck with the builder’s thermostat since not many smart thermostats are compatible with fan coil/heat pump systems. The builder’s thermostat is not even programmable!

  2. The Nest Cam would be a great addition to our house. Being able to see the kids come and go to school when we are at work would be a nice sense of security.

  3. The Nest Cam IQ Wi-Fi Outdoor 1080p Security Camera would make a difference in my daily life because the camera features a 4K sensor, 12x digital zoom, and HDR imaging to capture razor-sharp video footage up to 1920 x 1080p.

  4. I love the thermostat, and would really enjoy having the outdoor camera as we had flowers stolen from our front porch.

  5. Impeccable timing, Best Buy! I’ve had my eye on the Nest Cam IQ Wi-Fi Outdoor 1080p Security Camera for a while now. It is the perfect solution to keep an eye on my driveway. I love the integration of Nest products with Google’s Home Mini assistants and the Outdoor Camera will compliment my home very nicely.

Thank you very much for this opportunity, Best Buy, and Google / Nest! Keep those amazing products coming!

  6. The Nest Wifi Smart thermostat is the thing to have. The idea of coming home to a snug and warm home after work on a cold blustery day would be a dream come true. All at the same time as I’m saving money because I wouldn’t have to leave the thermostat turned up full is ideal

  7. For me, the one smart home product that I would like to add to my life over everything else you would have to be Google Home. Daily tasks can take up A LOT of my time, but with Google Home, I can get organized and get the answers I need when I need them just by using my voice. Not to mention it looks great, sounds great and it’s REALLY COOL!

  8. Lutron Caseta light switches throughout the house would be top for me. No more having to worry if i left the lights on our not.

  9. Would love to add Nest to my smart home! Just starting down this road and love seeing all the ideas!

  10. I could really use the Nest Hello Wi-Fi Video Doorbell. I have an inconsistent schedule that takes me out of the house and I hate missing ba package delivery. This would also really help answer the door when I’m up on the second floor. Many times it’s hard to hear the door knock and make it downstairs in time.

  11. We really want the Nest Lock. My wife checks if our door is locked before she goes to sleep every day. It would be much easier to check it with an app.

  12. Would love to add some smart lighting , maybe some Philips lights to go along with this Google/Nest smart home pack.

  13. Nest Cam Wi-Fi Outdoor 1080p IP Camera to check if everything was OK and for the insurance, and the Nest WiFi Hello doorbell and lock to respond to anyone like deliverer’s, even if I am out.

    Thank you!

  14. The one smart home product that I would like to add to your daily life would for sure be the Hello Doorbell this is next level in making my home more secure and more awesome!

  15. I need to see what my puppy is doing when I’m not home! Maybe if I can talk through my camera… A nest cam IQ is the way to go.

  16. I’d really really love the Nest outdoor IQ cam ! I read that it alerts you when there’s movement and there’s two way communication. Most importantly I would be notified if someone is coming or going if I’m not there. Before the age of 2 my daughter took herself out for a walk and since then I’m constantly checking the doors are closed and locked (we have child proofed since !) But this would give this mom of 2 little ones some peace of mind.

  17. I’d have to get the Nest Hello doorbell, I have everything else Neat and my Existing Ring doorbell keeps failing.

  18. I’d love to upgrade my thermostat to the Nest Wi-Fi Smart Learning Thermostat 3rd Gen, this would allow me to better control and set throughout the day the house’s temperature all the while allowing for future temperature control based on specific room temperature.

  19. That Ring Hello look sooo good i was shopping for it the other day. I need this in my life !! 🙂

  20. The Nest Hello doorbell would go a long way to put my mind at ease when I leave the house. I often have to turn around to check if they doors are locked and this way I could check from anywhere.

  21. Having the Nest Hello Wi-Fi Video Doorbell would put my mind at ease when I leave the house. I often have to turn around and check if the doors are locked and this would give me that piece of mind that I can check if they’re locked from anywhere.

  22. In would like to add a Nest temperature sensor so I can better control the room temperature in my office which has an irregular shape and a Nest Thermostat E.

  23. Hands down what I would get is the nest thermostat. I like the Eco mode while away settings to save money on heating and the ability to control it from anywhere. Most importantly the ability to control it from bed when it’s feeling a bit too chilly out and you require more warmth in the house in order to start your day.

  24. I would really love to have a Nest learning thermostat! It seems very convenient for our cold winter!

  25. I’d love to have the Ring Floodlight Cam so I can say hello to the neighborhood coyotes at 110 db and see their reaction in HD and have more peace of mind when I’m out with our 8 month old Sheppard in the dark that they are more leary of our property

  26. I’d like the Nest Hello doorbell. The ability to see who is at my door, even when I am away would be great!

  27. Nest Cam IQ Wi-Fi Indoor 1080p IP Camera. We have a homestead and we are trying to use cameras to catch wild life and farm animal antics as part of the joy of the property. This camera would be great off the back of the outbuildings peering into the woods.

  28. I would like Nest IQ outdoor camera in the front and back of the house. Especially one on the backyard pool for safety and security.

  29. Our baby monitor recently kicked the bucket and id be really interested in seeing if the nest cam iq indoor would be a suitable alternative. Especially now that the kids arent babies anymore.

  30. Personally I’d like to get the nest hello. It hooks up with my google pixel 3 seemlessly and provides advanced features like recognizing faces so they’ll know if its a stranger or your friends thats visiting.

  31. Nest thermostat because I’m currently using an old honey well thermostat! I have to manually change the temperature and turn on and off the heat which is not very environmentally friendly!

  32. Having a Nest protect would be so amazing and Nest security system I would be able to do my travels and have no more worries for my home.

  33. I’d like to add a Nest Hello Wi-Fi Video Doorbell to my daily life so I can see who’s at the door before I answer it.

  34. I would love to have a Nest Wi-Fi Smart Learning Thermostat 3rd Gen so that I can add a smart thermostat to my existing ecosystem of smart home accessories. It will also help me save on heating costs.
