aquasana-powered-water-filtration.jpgHow much water do you drink? I’ll confess, since moving from a home with city water to a well, my water consumption has declined. We’ve had the water tested and it’s turned out OK, but it’s got a yellow tint to it and it’s sort of smelly.

Of course I had to Google yellow water, and I was pretty disgusted to find out that water contains a lot of chemicals and contaminants. Even if your water is crystal clear it could contain chlorine, asbestos, herbicides, pesticides, and cryptosporidium.

I lived in Kelowna when the city had a cryptosporidium outbreak and 15,000 people got sick from the water. In terms of things I’ve wanted to experience during life, crypto was not one of them.

Since that point, I had tried to always have a pitcher of filtered water ready, just so I could keep a jug in the fridge and have it ready to go when we were thirsty. Unfortunately drip pitchers can take a really long time to run though. The one I had years ago was handed off to someone else within a month. It took up space in my fridge and I’d constantly forget to fill it.

Now that I’m once again in a weird water situation, I was very happy to see that water pitchers have changed for the better. After trying out the Aquasana Powered Water Filtration System over the past few weeks, I’m a huge fan of this easy, convenient way to filter and dispense water.

Here are my thoughts on the Aquasana Powered Water Filtration System.

The Aquasana Powered Water Filtration System includes an Aquasana powered base and two Aquasana buckets to hold the water. One bucket has an internal reservoir that filters the water into an external reservoir. It also includes one pitcher to hold water in your fridge, and an extra lid that dispenses water.

The extra lid will sit on top of the water bucket while it’s in the power base, so you can just tuck it in the corner of your kitchen and dispense water as you need it.

The power base and bucket are both very narrow, so they easily fit under a cupboard or on a shelf.

Testing the Aquasana

Most pitcher water filters look about the same. They have a clear bucket that’s topped by a lid with a filter in it. You pour the water into the pitcher, it filters through, and you’re left with clean, drinkable water.

Seems pretty easy, and it is, but it can take a long time to filter water with a regular pitcher, and you don’t always end up filtering everything you need. In order to drink it I have to be sure that the only stuff left in my water is stuff that belongs there.

10425032.jpgThat’s the beauty of the Aquasana Powered Water Filtration System. It has a Claryum Smart Filter that works to remove everything that shouldn’t be there while retaining what should be.

This is how the Claryum Smart Filter works:

  • Activated Carbon: removes herbicides, pesticides, and VOCs
  • Catalytic Carbon: removes chlorine and chloramines
  • Ion-Exchange: Filters heavy metals including mercury and lead
  • Absolute Sub-micron Mechanical Filtration: Removes chlorine resistant cysts like cryptosporidium and captures asbestos

The smart filter also keeps minerals like Calcium, Potassium, and Magnesium. Those are naturally occurring and keep your water healthy, so you want them to stay.

To use the Aquasana all I had to do was plug in the base unit and fill up a jug of water. When you put the jug in the base unit it automatically starts working, and by automatically I mean the power turns on before you’ve even got the pitcher seated in the unit.

It runs through a jug of water in under 20 seconds. If you want to you can empty the jug of filtered water into the extra pitcher and filter another jug through. Then all you have to do is pop the dispensing top on the jug and you’re ready to drink.

As I mentioned before, my tap water is yellow. When I fill up the sink to do dishes, it’s yellow. When we try to take a bath, it’s really yellow. I don’t worry because I’ve had it tested and sometimes that comes with the territory when you have a well, but I’ve never tried to drink it. When I put the water into the pitcher to be filtered, I could see a slight yellow tint. When it came back out, all the yellow was gone. The smell was gone too. I made sure I did a sniff test before and after I filtered it, and although the smell wasn’t that strong before, whatever it was disappeared after I used the Aquasana.

The real test is drinking it though. I was a little nervous, but that glass of water was cold, refreshing, and I’ll admit it, as good as any bottle of water I’ve tried. I was so excited I had the kids try it too, and although they were skeptical, we were all impressed with what we were left with.

The only thing you need to worry about with the Aquasana is changing the filter. It’s rated for 320 gallons or six months. That’s the equivalent of 2400 bottles of water. Imagine all the plastic water bottles you’ll avoid using.

The blue light on the base unit will blink read when the filter is at 90% use, and it will stay red when it must be changed. It’s very simple to change the filter too: just open up the lid and unscrew the filter. Pop the new one in, and you’re done.

You can see my yellow water before it was filtered in the video below:

aquasana powered water filtration in action.jpgOverall thoughts

There are two reasons why the Aquasana stands out among other water filter pitchers. One, it’s fast. You never have to wait even a minute for a clean, clear glass of water, and that’s practical in so many ways. I have a small fish tank that I don’t like to clean because I have to let the tap water sit in a bucket with chemicals to remove all of the contaminants. With the Aquasana, I filtered the water and changed the entire bowl in less than 10 minutes.

The other reason why Aquasana is the best water filter option: the filter keeps the healthy minerals in the water. Other filters don’t tend to do that, and having calcium and magnesium in your drinking water is beneficial to good health.

I really liked the Aquasana, and I’d definitely keep it on my cupboard and use it every day. If you need a water filtration system in your home, check out the Aquasana Powered Water Filtration System. It’s available on Bestbuy.ca.
