Fitbit charge 5 heart healthHeart Health Month (February) is a great time to get more from your Fitbit. I’m sure you are already happy it gets you out of your seat during the day, so you get 10,000 or more steps each day. Fitbit is the best motivator for movement. However, it’s capable of a lot more than that. I’ll explain some of the ways to get more from your Fitbit below, then enter for a chance to win one of three that we are giving away in this contest.

What is Heart Health Month and who should care

We’ve all known someone with heart health issues. Some of these are worse than others, some are not preventable. However, some issues can be improved with patience and a plan. I want to emphasize both of these. Patience is important because our bodies can be resistant to change, even positive change. Few things we do will bring dramatic perceptible change overnight. Be patient though, since we know from countless testimonials and medical studies, that positive change is possible and often you won’t feel different immediately as your lungs and heart get stronger and healthier.

A challenging thing about heart health is most of us are unaware where we stand in terms of our own heart. Heart health month is meant to help us all become more interested in taking care of our heart. Importantly, the new line of wearables, like the Fitbit Charge 5 we are giving away in this contest, can go a long way to helping you learn more about your heart and to monitor and reveal the changes in your heart health that occur due to good (e.g., exercise) or bad (sitting for hours at a computer without breaks) daily habits.

Plan to improve your heart health this year

You can do many things to affect your heart health (positively and negatively). Activity, for example, can be good or bad depending on how much and how prepared your body is. You’ve likely heard of people who had a medical emergency for doing an unusual activity like moving furniture. You don’t want that. The best way to begin, therefore, is to consult a medical professional like a physician before you begin a new program to improve heart health.

The doctor will base his assessment on what they see: test results and lab results. However, imagine if you could bring a set of results collected over multiple days with you to the doctor’s office. That is easy enough with the modern fitness trackers like the Charge 5. You can show the doctor how your heart rate varied through the days leading up to your appointment, ECG patterns (so they can see the pattern of your heart beats), average oxygen levels, sleep patterns, and more. Most people use their trackers to monitor steps and you could incorporate step tracking into your improvement plan. However, your plan can also include monitoring for subtle changes in heart rate and stress levels over time: you likely can’t perceive those changes but a Fitbit can!

Should you begin to exercise this year

Exercise is a broad term that incorporates the a range of activities. For you, a good exercise might be a half hour walk each day. At the other extreme, a very athletic person might prefer a two hour bike ride on hilly terrain.

This is the kind of person who might enter a fitness challenge like the recently advertised casting call for “Ultimate Challenge Canada.” Imagine travelling the country participating in fitness challenges, getting expert coaching, and developing lifelong memories along the way. It sounds really cool to me: as a spectator! Too intense for me to participate but I’d watch it from the comfort of my living room sofa—after my daily half hour walk, of course.

For now, enter for a chance to win a new Fitbit Charge 5 so you can start monitoring your heart health, and preparing to become a healthier version of you.
