I’m one of those people who like to replace my pillows, sheets, and duvet cover every few months. I like my foam pillows on the firm but not-so-firm side, and after a few months of use they tend to pack down a bit too much for my liking.
The same goes for my sheets and duvet cover. It’s not that I stop using the sheets after I replace them, it’s just nice to mix things up a bit by having another set around.
But replacing sheets, pillows, and duvet covers isn’t just a nice way to change the style of your bedroom – it’s a great way to get more sleep. Everyone should have a cozy, comfortable bed, because that spot will be your sanctuary when you’re tired, sick, or just need a warm place to cocoon.
Kick off your new year by making your bed your favourite spot in the entire house. Here’s all of the bedding you can choose from and how to keep it perfectly clean and cozy once you’ve brought it home:
Mattress covers
A mattress cover is the foundation of a comfortable bed. Not only does it protect you from dust and allergens, it will make every mattress more comfortable.
An Urban Loft Cotton Mattress Pad will protect your mattress while providing the most comfortable surface on which to place your sheets and blankets. It’s also hypoallergenic.
If you want to add a bit of extra fluff to your mattress, you can’t go wrong with a Sleep Solutions Down-Top Featherbed. It’s stuffed with 600 loft white duck down and has 240-thread count combed cotton on the top and bottom. You’ll feel like you are sleeping on a cloud.
Sheets & Duvet covers
Instead of focusing on high thread counts, choose a set of sheets or a duvet cover that feels the most comfortable to you. Any thread count between 200 to 400 is good to shoot for, and look for combed cotton if you like ultra-soft sheets.
If like Egyptian cotton sheets, take a look at the Maholi Solid 4-piece Egyptian cotton sheet set. They have 250-thread count, are made from 100% Egyptian combed cotton, and will wick away any moisture you may have in the middle of the night.
Duvet covers will make your bed look crisp and clean every day if you choose a soft percale fabric blend like the Maholi Embroidered Duvet Cover Set. It’s 310-thread count and made from 100% deluxe cotton percale.
Taking the best care of your new sheets
It’s a sad fact that the very act of washing your favourite set of sheets will cause them to break down and wear out over time.
Once you’ve got brand new bedding, don’t forget that washing and drying your bedding the right away will preserve their lifespan. Wash them once per week to remove any dirt or dust, and use warm water instead of hot because hot water can shrink the fibers and make any prints fade. Tumble dry your sheets and take them out of the dryer before they’re fully dry to minimize any wrinkles you may have.
Duvets
A fluffy duvet is the cherry on top when it comes to beds, and there are so many different types of duvets and comforters, there’s something for everyone. You can choose a natural silk duvet, a duck down duvet, or a luxurious goose down duvet. If you suffer from allergies, there’s also microgel duvets created with cotton and poly blend.
Pillows
Stacey’s post on pillowscovers everything you need to know about how to choose the perfect pillow, but how do you take care of your pillows once you’ve picked the best one for you?
Pillows should be washed at least twice per year, and if you have a pillow cover, those should be washed once per month. If you’ve ever washed your pillow and it’s caused your washing machine to jump half way across the room, you should put two pillows in to even out the weight distribution during washing.
Down and feather pillows will come out best if you use the air dry cycle on your dryer, and foam can only stand a low heat setting so don’t turn the dryer up to high.
