ASUS is releasing new laptops at CES, including the Zenbook Duo and its dual-screen setup designed to help with productivity and creativity. The new Zenbooks come with some slick design traits, not least of which is a dual-screen model that really stands out in a crowd. If you want a quick update on the latest features on laptops you can check out the laptop buying guide, but here’s what’s new from ASUS at CES 2024.
Zenbook Duo has two screens in one body
The Zenbook Duo almost feels like it can be two devices in one. Sporting dual 14-inch 2K OLED touchscreens with 16:10 aspect ratios and 120Hz refresh rates, they can effectively create 19.8-inches worth of screen real estate to work with. You can either use it in standard laptop orientation or prop it up sideways in case that works better. A kickstand in the rear helps to keep it upright, either way, and you have some flexibility over the viewing angle.
The included keyboard pairs in two ways, which is via magnetic pins on the Duo itself or via Bluetooth to use wirelessly. That way, you can prop up the screens however you like without losing input controls. Asus also placed the trackpad in front of the keys rather than off to the side, addressing an ergonomic concern from previous dual-screen models. The only catch is that the keyboard’s battery life is affected by the backlit keys. Leave them on and you’ll have to recharge it by end of day. Leave them off and you can keep using it for up to two weeks on one charge. What’s neat is the tiny gap between the keyboard and screen when you attach it, saving the latter from any scratches while typing on it. You can also choose to use a fully onscreen keyboard and trackpad as well.
It’s worth noting that the two screens can fold (relatively) flat at 180-degrees, but don’t have full 360-degree flexibility. You can’t pitch it like a tent so the two screens face opposite directions. ASUS says it did it that way because most collaborations wouldn’t need such a setup. The good news is you can apply different settings to each screen using the onboard ScreenXpert software, so one can be brighter than the other, or display totally different content. It’s also possible to set it to ViewMax mode to display content across both screens entirely.
Under the hood of Zenbook Duo
Despite everything going on with the Duo, it’s quite thin at 14.6mm and offers two Thunderbolt 4 ports, one USB-A port, one HDMI 2.1 port and 3.5mm audio jack. The onboard speakers are Dolby Atmos-certified and made by Harman Kardon.
Inside, configurations can run with Intel’s new Core Ultra 7 H-series processor, 16GB of RAM, and up to 2TB of storage. With Intel’s newest processor comes the first integrated Neural Processing Unit (NPU) whose only purpose is to drive the AI-related features and low-power processes that help increase overall efficiency, leaving the main CPU to deal with more demanding tasks. Based on ASUS’ own Wi-Fi and video playback test, the Duo can last up to 15 hours with one screen and up to 10 hours with both on. Those numbers could be very different depending on mixed usage.
