There are two things I considered when I bought my first coffee maker. First, I love a good cup, with that rich, aromatic flavour you could only get from quality beans. Second, I drink coffee every day (two cups to be exact). Getting my fix from coffee shops at that rate would break my pocket. As someone who enjoys coffee that much, I find better value for my money if I make it at home—with my own coffee maker. And, the best part about having one is the cool and exciting recipes I learn and enjoy along the way.

Read on for a few of my favourite recipes and enter for a chance to win the Nespresso Vertuo Next Premium coffee and espresso machine and the Ember 414ml (14 oz.) Smart Temperature Control Mug 2.

The perfect cup of coffee

The secret to delicious coffee involves the right ratio: the amount of coffee and the amount of water you use to extract the flavour. For me the entire process has been a delightful morning ritual. It’s also an enjoyable skill to learn—from grinding my coffee beans to frothing my milk. Having the right tools goes a long way to help you capture that rich flavour in every cup. Get a reliable coffee maker—like the Breville Barista Touch, Miele CM 5310 Silence, and Nespresso Vertuo Next—that lets you create a variety of coffee drinks right at your own home.

5 easy coffee recipes you can make at home

Coffee is a versatile drink. A lot of recipes, like the ones I’m featuring here, use milk to create that sweet, creamy taste many of us love. You can also use alternative options like almond, soy, coconut, and oat (my personal favourite), which also add subtle flavour. Whatever milk you’re using, you can take the guesswork out of frothing with the Nespresso Aeroccino 3.

Hot or cold, you can have your coffee any way you want. Add ice to any recipe with the Insignia portable ice maker right on your kitchen top, or enjoy any hot drink longer with the help of the Ember Smart Temperature Control Mug 2.

1. Pumpkin spice latte

Latte is a classic coffee drink. Simply, it’s espresso and milk. However, the Pumpkin Spice latte (also widely known as PSL) takes it further by adding a whole lot of ingredients all in one cup. I think it’s one of the most intricate coffee recipes out there. Though it’s popularly an autumnal drink, you don’t have to wait for fall to have a cup of PSL right in your hand. Create that thick, honey-coloured coffee crema with the Breville Barista Touch automatic espresso machine.

What you’ll need:

  • 2 shots espresso
  • 250 ml. milk
  • 2 ½ tsp. pumpkin purée
  • Spice mix (1 tsp. ground cinnamon, 1/4 tsp. ground ginger, 1/8 tsp. ground cloves, and 1/4 tsp. ground nutmeg)
  • ½ tsp. vanilla extract
  • 2 tbsp. maple syrup

How to prepare:

  1. Create a mixture of your pumpkin purée, spice mix, vanilla extract, and maple syrup in a large mug
  2. Add two shots of espresso to your mixture and stir well
  3. Froth your milk using the Breville Barista Touch steaming wand until you get desired temperature and texture. Then, carefully pour into your mixture to blend all ingredients
  4. Sprinkle spice mix over your froth

2. Spiced flat white

The spiced flat white is another seasonal favourite. If you like your coffee strong this is a great recipe for you. Like your regular latte, you only need milk and strong coffee to be able to make a regular flat white. The difference is that flat white has less milk and less froth than a latte, so you’ll get a richer and fuller coffee flavour. For this recipe I’d use the Nespresso Aeroccino 3 milk frother. Make sure to use the spring-less whisk for that perfect flat white froth. Plus, it works for both hot and cold milk.

What you’ll need:

  • 2 shots espresso or ½ cup strong coffee
  • 100 ml. milk
  • 1 pinch cinnamon and nutmeg powder

How to prepare:

  1. Pull two shots of espresso or ½ cup strong coffee into small cup
  2. Add cinnamon and nutmeg. Stir into a nice blend.
  3. Froth 100 ml. milk in the Nespresso Aeroccino 3. Frothing takes about minute. Then, pour into your espresso spice blend.

3. Coffee mousse

Who doesn’t want a nice dessert? I know I do. Coffee adds sophisticated flavour to any dessert, giving the right contrast to the subtle sweetness that usually comes with a lot of ingredients. Serve this at your nice get-together with friends and family and it will be a sure showstopper. You can use espresso or strong brewed coffee with this recipe. With your Miele CM 5310 Silence countertop coffee machine, you have the option to select between using whole beans or pre-ground coffee.

What you’ll need:

  • 1 shot espresso and ¼ cup strong coffee
  • 6 ounces melted chocolate
  • 1 ½ cup heavy cream
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • A pinch of salt

How to prepare:

  1. Whisk your heavy whipping cream in a bowl until you get a stiff peak
  2. Add coffee, chocolate, salt, and vanilla. Blend well until the ingredients fully integrate into a nice mousse texture
  3. Portion the mousse into serving containers, then leave in the fridge for a few hours
  4. When served, top with more whipping cream, chocolate bits, or with a couple of coffee beans for a nice garnish

4. Iced saffron latte

Another latte recipe that never fails to intrigue my tastebuds is saffron latte. Saffron’s delicate, earthy and floral flair adds a whole lot of flavour to your regular latte. It became an instant hit when I served this as a cold drink to my friends last summer. It’s easy to make as it’s delicious. You’ll only need two main ingredients for this recipe: saffron milk and espresso. To serve cold, add ice from the Insignia 26 lb. portable ice maker.

What you’ll need:

  • 2 shots espresso or ½ cup strong coffee
  • 200 ml. milk
  • 1 pinch saffron
  • As many ice cubes as you like

How to prepare:

  1. Simmer your milk with saffron for 5-7 minutes Then steam using a frothing wand or a automatic frother
  2. Pull two shots of espresso and add a few cubes of ice
  3. Pour your steamed saffron milk

5. Affogato

What I love about this coffee recipe is that it combines two of my favourites: coffee and ice cream. Affogato literally means “drowned” in Italian. Immerse your ice cream in hot espresso to create that creamy mix. A classic affogato uses vanilla gelato. But ice cream does the trick and it’s usually cheaper and more readily available everywhere in your favourite grocery stores. Try the Nespresso Vertuo Next Premium coffee and espresso Machine to create that rich, frothy espresso that blends well in your affogato.

What you’ll need

  • 2 scoops vanilla ice cream
  • 2 shots espresso
  • Optional toppings (shaved chocolate, caramel sauce, or cherry)

How to prepare:

  1. Scoop ice cream into a clear glass
  2. Pour 2 shots of espresso
  3. Add your favourite toppings
