Paper Mario

It seems like the rumours were true! The beloved Paper Mario series is coming to the Nintendo Switch with Paper Mario: The Origami King on July 17,2020. The game features an all-new story and was a surprise announcement from Nintendo.

For those unaware, the Paper Mario series of games first launched back on the Nintendo 64. It is considered by many to be the spiritual successor to Super Mario RPG on the SNES. The games feature a distinctive visual style, which consists of 2D paper “cutout” characters in 3D papercraft environments.

Let’s take a look at all the juicy details and what’s in store for us this July.

An all-new adventure with an evil origami plan

The Kingdom is throwing an origami festival and Princess Peach has invited our two favourite brothers, Mario and Luigi to help celebrate. Though, something seems not quite right to Mario and Luigi with Princess Peach. In the debut trailer, Princess Peach asks Mario to fold himself like she is. When Mario refuses, Peach takes the floor out from Mario’s feet and sends him down a pit.

As the origami plot unfolds, the self-proclaimed ruler of the Origami Kingdom, King Olly has hatched a plan that threatens the entire world. As a result, he’s transported Princess Peach’s Castle to a distant mountain and wrapped it in giant, colourful streamers! That’s not all! Moreover, King Olly has transformed Bowser’s minions into Folder Soldiers and is using them to cause destruction and chaos.

And, we also learned that Mario has a new partner, Olivia—who just happens to be King Olly’s good natured sister. They team up with the Toads and Bowser to fight off King Olly and his Folder Soldiers!

New abilities and gameplay mechanics

In Paper Mario: The Origami King, Mario has a whole slew of new abilities. One in particular, that we get to see in the trailer, is called 1000-Fold Arms. And, as you might have guessed, Mario’s arms grow really long. As a result, this allows you to interact with the environment in places that you might not normally be able to reach and solve puzzles.

Not only does Mario have new abilities but there is an all-new ring-based battle system in the game. These dynamic turned based battles allow you to strategically take out your enemies one-by-one.

Paper Mario: The Origami King is coming this July

If Paper Mario: The Origami King is even half as good as any of the other games in the series, I’m all in. Above all, from the surprise announcement and trailer, it looks like Paper Mario is ready to make a big splash on Nintendo Switch come July 17,2020.

I can’t wait to use Mario’s new 1000-Fold Arms ability and the turn based battle system is just my cup of tea. Are you a fan of the Paper Mario series of games?
