Hands-on with Pokémon: Let’s Go

As a fan, I couldn’t be happier to get a taste of the just announced Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! & Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee! Switch games from Nintendo. Here’s my experience with the game on Nintendo Switch, and the Poké Ball Plus!

The game blends the Pokémon Go mobile mechanic of catching wild Pokémon and engaging into turn-based combat against trainers. The demo takes us into Kanto region, where the 151 first generation Pokémon lives. Rendered in a beautiful 3D environment, monsters don’t hide anymore. I loved seeing them evolve around us, running and playing with each other.

Standing in the village, trainers will engage into combat as soon as we get too close. Battles uses the same mechanic fans are already familiar with. Boost up your team and gain experience levels in a turn-based Pokémon battle.

Pokémon you catch into the Pokémon Go mobile app can transfer into the game. If you still have Pokémon Go installed into your mobile device, you have plenty of time catching and levelling up your Pokémon team before you buy Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! & Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee!

The Poke Ball Plus looks and feels amazing

Not only did I play the game, but I played it using the Poke Ball Plus controller. Now THAT is awesome. As you can expect, it feels like having real Pokémon ball into your hands. Plus, it can be used as a controller throughout the entire game.

Sizewise, think about the Kirby amiibo. The Poke Ball Plus is pretty much the same size. It’s comfortable to adult hands but small enough so children can play effortlessly. Put on the strap on your wrist, slide your finger into a ring and hold the ball.

On the white lock sit an analog stick to navigate through menus. Press it to select your action and catch Pokémon! The catching phase is simple. Centered on the screen, the animal waits for the ball. Colored circle tells the difficulty level of the catch.

Giving items such as fruit help taming the animal for best results. Then, do the movement and catch it. Not too fast or too hard, do it just right. Once the Pokémon enters the ball, you can feel it shake, then hear the clicking sound when you succeed. Put it by your ear and you’ll hear the little scream of your new friend.

With the Poké Ball Plus and Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! & Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee, Pokémon fans will finally live the ultimate Pokémon experience. Catching Pokémon in real life, what a dream come true for Pokémon fans! Both games and the Poké Ball Plus will be available November 16, 2018.

  1. I thought they had previously stated that Pokemon could not transfer from the Switch into Pokemon Go. I know they said you could transfer to the Switch, but after their previous announcement it is surprising to see that pokemon can transfer to mobile phones.

I’m still not completely sold on this game, but I think I will try and find a way to at least play a little of it,

    • I know they only have the first gen so maybe they can’t transfer other Pokémon but let me verify the info. I could have misunderstood. :O

      • Modified the article before I know more (I don’t want to confuse people hehe)
