Christmas Tree - Smart light

The holidays are a great time to set up decorative smart lighting inside your home. The smart lighting options we have available today provide endless creative lighting expression. The best part is that, unlike Christmas decorations, these can stay all year long. If you’re ready to enhance your home with cool and innovative light creations, here are some things to consider.

Light Panels - Smart lights

Adding smart light panels to the wall

One of the best ways to decorate with smart lighting is with smart light panels. These are smart, modular light panels that mount onto a wall. Construct them together to create an intricate design on the wall. A good tip is to start by locating the nearest power source. From there, work your way backwards to create a creative light design on the wall.

Typically, light panels are controlled by touch, an app, or voice. They also incorporate a host of effects to decorate any space. First, many have a Rhythm feature that reacts to sound in real time. This is great during parties—the light panels sync to music to set the vibe for the night. Second, many of the popular light panels have a screen mirror feature. This reflects the same colours from a screen like a TV to the light panels. This makes it the perfect decorative piece in the entertainment room for family movie nights. Third, light panels use layout-detecting technology. It analyses the layout you created on the wall inside the app. From there, it enables colour animations to flow between panels. It’s one thing to set up decorative lights. It’s a whole other thing to set up decorative light animation effects.

LED Lights - Smart lights

Adding smart LED light strips

One of the best ways to decorate a space with ambient lighting is with smart LED light strips. These are a line of LED lights that run across a flexible strip with double-sided tape. Unlike light panels, smart LED light strips work best when you can’t see the strip itself. The light that it reflects onto surfaces like walls, ceilings, and floors is the decorative piece itself. Place under desks, behind computer monitors, or under the bed frame to create cool lighting effects.

LED Light strips typically come in a fixed length. However, they can typically be connected together to form long strips. They are bendable too and users can shape them around corners. Group multiple LED light strips and control them all together as a single unit. With voice assistants, control the lights and the colour through your voice. The great thing about smart LED light strips is that you can use them as decorations one day and as a standard room light the next. As a white light, it’s a great way to lighten up a room without directly seeing the light itself.

Outdoor smart lights

Setting up smart holiday outdoor lighting

In the past, people would set up Christmas lights to kick off the holiday season. Then at New Year, they take them down and store them for next Christmas. Thanks to RGB LEDs, new smart outdoor lighting Christmas lights need a single installation. They are typically long string lights with small LEDs evenly spaced out across the line. The multi-colour effects provide endless decoration options for trees, shrubs, fences, and railings. Leave them in place all year round, and use them for other holidays like Canada Day, and St. Patricks Day.

There are several different types of outdoor lighting to decorate your home. RGB LED spot lights are a great way to add mood lighting to an outdoor spaces like patios, decks, and gardens. Change the colours from your smartphone to match the mood of the season. Strategically point the spot light onto plants to highlight them at night. With multi-colour spot lights, your outdoor decoration options are endless.

Upgrading to multi-colour smart lights

The easiest way to decorate your home with lights is to retrofit your old ones with smart bulbs. They fit into existing light sockets and look like conventional light bulbs. However, they connect to your Wi-Fi network and provide multi-colour lighting to any space. Use them as traditional white lights for everyday use. When it’s time to host a holiday party, switch to different colours to decorate your space. Smart bulbs can be grouped together and connected to voice assistants like Google Assistant and Alexa. From there, users can change light colours in rooms with their voices. Basically, you can decorate the whole house with colour with a simple voice command. If that doesn’t impress guests, nothing will.

Music on colourful speakers

The holidays and other events are always better with music. Conversely, music is better with lights. If you follow that logic, then holidays, music, and lights are the ultimate trifecta. Party speakers provide the best of both worlds—music and lights in one device. Bluetooth connectivity means that anyone can play DJ from their phone. Built-in lights sync to the music and turn any space into a dance floor. Party speakers also feature rugged construction for indoor and outdoor use. Use it to decorate your backyard with music and light effects. Some models have inputs for microphones for karaoke and speeches.

Spot light smart lights

Smart lights as home decorations

With a little creativity, anyone can decorate a space with smart lighting. With spot lights, transform any white wall into a canvas for ambient lighting. Or use light panels to decorate a wall with creative patterns and custom light effects. Smart LED light strips provide endless ambient lighting opportunities. They work great under desks, beds, and couches. Decorate the back of your TV with LED light strips to reflect off the back wall. Group them together with smart bulbs and control all the light colours with your voice. Better yet, connect indoor lights with your smart outdoor lighting as a single-house group. Then you can turn all your lights on and off—or change the colour with a single command.

Remember, it’s one thing to decorate with your hands. It’s another to decorate with your voice. Read this smart lights buying guide for more ideas on how you can decorate your home with cool smart light designs.

  1. I love smart litghts. Even if it’s something as simple as putting a wifi smart socket on a lamp and being able to ask Google to turn on and off lights. It’s also cool to be able to tell Google to “Turn on Christmas” and have the lights on the tree and around the house turn on and some start playing Christmas music.
