Who knows where the time went. All of a sudden, your little baby is a little toddler. And it means being able to redesign both your bedroom and his to claim back your decorative space.

For the first few months of his life, maybe even the first year, your little one has been sharing a room with you. First, in a bassinet or in your bed. Then, in a crib. Maybe he shifted over to his own room pretty quickly. Either way, there was plenty of room taken up by this baby gear in your sleeping quarters—the crib, the change table, shelves or furniture to house everything from diapers to wipes and receiving blankets, a diaper pail—the list goes on.

A new bed for your toddler

toddler-bed.jpgNow that he’s moved on from a crib stage, and even the daybed stage, it’s time to make his room look like a little kid’s room, not a baby’s. First thing’s first: you need to get a toddler bed.

The Stork Craft Soom Soom Contemporary toddler bed is a cool option that offers the look of a true “big boy” or “big girl” bed with the added security of built-in safety rails on either side. It holds a standard sized crib mattress, and can accommodate a child up to 50 lbs.—which for most, will go beyond the preschool days. It’s made of durable and solid wood and uses a non-toxic finish in elegant espresso. It’s a great transitional bed not just for baby, but you too!

For the parents’ room

Now, it’s time to move on to your own room. Since you can get rid of the bassinet, swing, change table, and baby safe decorative items, you can spruce the room back up to one that fits better with the home’s decor and an adult mindset.

Bed

The focal point of any bedroom is, of course, the bed. So why not splurge on a brand new one to start off the room redesign? The Jacky Heirloom Contemporary queen platform bed in charcoal is a lovely option. With linen-look fabric, it’s a break from the traditional wood, including the solid headboard that’s also covered in the same fabric. You can add a box spring, or lay low (literally) for a truly modern look. (And to, of course, make it easier for your toddler to jump up in bed with you those nights or mornings where they want a bit of cuddle time.)

Full Bedroom Furniture Set

If you want to make things easy and get a full matching bedroom set to give your room an entirely new look, check out one like the 8-piece Belleview queen bedroom set, which comes in either classy cherry or sophisticated black.

8 piece Belleview queen bedroom set.jpgIncluded in the set is a queen bed, along with a five-drawer dresser, mirror, six-drawer chest, and two nightstands. Along with the bed frame is a headboard and footboard. Add a few decor pieces, and you’re good to go with a fresh new look. All that’s left are the decor pieces.

TV

Having a TV in the bedroom can be a God send those nights (or days!) when you just want to curl up in bed with some Netflix, or catch the Sunday evening news before tucking in for the night. It’s great, too, for the lazy Sundays when you just want to catch that extra half hour of sleep—throw on a Sunday morning cartoon to keep your toddler occupied while you get a few more minutes of shuteye.

While the ideal size would depend on your room dimensions and how far your bed is from the TV, you’re likely safe with a 60” TV in a decent-sized bedroom. (Mine is fairly small but we still have a 55”, which is lg 60 inch 4k smart led TV.jpgperfect for the viewing distance.)

As they say, go big or go home, right? Check out LG’s 60” 4K Ultra HD 120 Hz IPS LED Smart TV (60UF7650) which features the webOS 2.0 interface for easy access to services like Netflix and YouTube if you don’t have a separate set-top box upstairs. Then, lay back in bed once the kids are turned in for the night and use the included Magic Remote to change channels or navigate the Smart TV interface. You can even use the Voice Mate feature with speech recognition to audibly dictate your commands. If you’re not ready for such a huge investment for the bedroom, consider this one for the living room and relocate your living room TV upstairs. Why not treat yourself?

Vanity

Now that mom actually has a bit more time to put on some makeup, consider opting for a cool and classy vanity. The Corliving Virginia Traditional vanity and stool is great as a decor and functional piece, plus adds some extra storage via its centre drawer for jewelry and other items. It’s finished in elegant cappuccino, and made of wood with microfiber upholstery on the seat.

Lamp

Top off the look with a pair of beautiful night table lamps that can be used for late night reading or work in bed. Consider something funky like the Aurora Lighting Fungiga table lamp, which comes in an oil brushed bronze finish with a flax cone shade. Perhaps use Philips Hue smart bulbs so you can change the colour of the lights, or turn them off from your smartphone: no more getting up to turn off the lights!

Art

Now that you’ve repainted and/or cleaned away the sticky finger and crayon markings, you can finish off the room with a nice soothing piece of art.

CAP Peace of Mind by Assaf Frank Giclee canvas art just screams calming, and would look perfect above a bed’s headboard.

Or keep it personal with a collage photo frame that features some of your nicest family pics, placed in a frame like the Kiera Grace Mira mirrored collage photo frame, which fits eight 4 x 6 photos in a 15” x 28” total space. You can hang it horizontally or vertically, wherever you see fits in the room.

Rug

An attractive, small area rug can tie everything together. The AG Home Chester 7’ x 10’ rug in a black and beige colour patterned abstract design can brighten up the room and add some European flair. The best part: it is easily vacuumed, and has an anti-static material that allows for easily removing stains and soils through spot cleaning with water and mild soap. Just make sure to get an anti-slip underpad to not only protect it, but also ensure the kids don’t slip when they inevitably come barreling into your room in the middle of the night after a bad dream.
