New kinds of computers and laptops are released almost every week, which is great if your current one isn’t quite living up to your needs. But that can leave a lot of us with some extra tech lying around that clutters up our homes and gathers dust. There are so many Canadians in need of a usable laptop, and you don’t want to contribute to the world’s environmental issues or put your personal data at risk by simply throwing it away.

But it doesn’t have to be this way, you can put your unused laptops to good use!

If you have an unused laptop lying around, we have a solution for you: the HP Refresh Program. Best Buy has partnered with HP to make it easy for you to safely wipe and reimage your unused laptop. Then we’ll help you donate it to a student in need through Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada (BGC Canada), so one more student in Canada can have the tech tools they need to succeed in school.

You’ll be able to safely remove your personal data from the laptop for free, while contributing it to a good cause, and reducing your environmental impact. Everybody wins.

The HP Refresh Program

Did you know that 1 in 3 students are without a laptop right now? That’s too many.

With so many schools relying on remote learning this year, having a usable laptop is a serious barrier to the quality education that every student deserves. That’s why Best Buy Canada and HP are helping to provide used laptops to students in need. Best Buy and HP are already donating millions of dollars’ worth of technology to help students, but by participating in the HP Refresh Program, you can help us do so much more.

Helping students in need with Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected the way we work, learn, and live on a daily basis. That means Best Buy’s purpose of enriching lives through technology has never been more important. That’s why we’re stepping in to connect BGC families throughout Canada with the technology they need, at a time when they need it most.

BGC Canada is a non-profit organization that supports and advocates for Canada’s children and youth. Through their programs, community-based services, and by fostering relationships with peers and caring adults, Boys and Girls Clubs help kids develop the skills they need to succeed. So many kids rely on these clubs for the support they need, and that’s why Best Buy is so proud to have had a strong partnership with BGC Canada since 2001.

When you donate your unused laptop through the HP Refresh Program, Best Buy will work with BGC Canada to get that laptop to a student who otherwise wouldn’t have access to one. Not only will you be able to safely prepare your laptop for donation for free, but you’ll also have the knowledge that a young student will now have better access to remote learning, and the technology they need to succeed. And that’s a good feeling.

Safely wipe and reimage your unused laptop for free

It’s not always easy to know what to do to prepare an unused laptop for donating or recycling. You might be unsure how to remove your personal data and keep it protected. If that’s what’s been holding you back from getting rid of yours, HP has a solution.

When you participate in the HP Refresh Program, HP will provide you with a free, safe download of their refresh software. This software safely wipes the data from your unused laptop, giving you peace of mind that your personal information is safe. It also reimages your laptop to reset its operating system, so it’s ready to help a student in need right away.

You get a safe, free way to dispose of an unwanted laptop, freeing up some extra storage space in your home, and a student in need gets a reimaged laptop for better access to education. Everybody wins!

And if you’re not super tech-savvy and aren’t confident reimaging or wiping the data from a computer, there’s no need to worry. HP also has a tutorial so you can follow along, and be confident that you’re doing everything right.

Reduce your environmental impact by extending a laptop’s life

image of dozens of laptops stacked on top of each other

The amount of old, unusable tech in the world grows every day as more electronic devices are discarded, leading to negative environmental impacts and contributing to the climate crisis. By mitigating the amount of tech heading to landfills, the HP Refresh Program not only benefits you and students in need, but also the planet we all live on.

While properly recycling your electronics can help, one of the best ways to reduce your environmental impact is to prolong the usable life of your devices. By donating a laptop through HP Refresh, you can extend its functional life, and keep it from ending up in a landfill.

At Best Buy, we support building a circular economy, a system in which no products or components are wasted. When an electronic device is kept in use for as long as possible, it can contribute the highest possible value to the human beings whom it was designed for. And when it does eventually meet its end-of-life, we can recycle its components and regenerate new products and materials to unleash their maximum value for a minimal environmental impact.

If for any reason your laptop cannot be donated through BGC Canada, Best Buy will happily recycle it through our battery and electronics recycling program. And if you decide not to participate in HP Refresh, our stores can still take unwanted electronics off your hands for recycling, even if you didn’t buy them from us.

How the HP Refresh Program works

HP’s free wiping and reimaging software makes it easy to safely get your laptop ready for donation, but you’ll need a few things before you can get started.

In addition to your donated laptop, you’ll also need a second, fully functional computer to help you wipe and reimage it. You’ll also need a USB flash drive, and each computer needs to meet a set of requirements.

What you will need:

  • Your donated laptop with the following requirements:
    • A 64-bit x86 processor or equivalent
    • At least 2 GB of memory (RAM)
    • A USB port to upload the HP software
    • A 4GB hard drive or larger
  • A second computer with the following requirements:
    • Computer must be fully functioning
    • Installed with Windows 7 or Windows 10
    • A USB port to create the USB boot drive
  • A 4 GB USB flash drive or larger (for best results, flash drive should be USB 3.0 compliant)

What you need to do:

  1. Download the HP Refresh free software onto your second, fully functioning computer (not the one you intend to donate). The software is available for download here.
  2. Follow the instructions provided by HP to wipe and reimage your laptop. HP also provides a detailed HP Refresh Installation Guide, so you can follow along and know you’re doing everything correctly.
  3. Once your unused laptop is wiped and reimaged, you can drop it off at your nearest Best Buy store. Please note Best Buy Mobile stores are not able to take donated laptops at this time. Also, The HP Refresh Program is only applicable in stores open for shopping. Customers are encouraged to check the store locator for details on your nearest store.
  4. You did it! Now you can sit back with that extra storage space in your home knowing that your efforts not only helped a student in need, but also reduced your environmental footprint. Way to go!
