Airthings Wave radon detector reviewNovember is Radon action month. Did you know that radon gas that seeps up from radioactive elements deep underground can collect in your home? You can’t smell it, taste it, or see it either. And radon is deadly, leading to more cases of lung cancer than any other cause for non-smokers. To help raise awareness of the dangers of radon, Best Buy is giving away 2 sets of Airthings monitors in this contest.

How can you be sure the air in your home is safe?

Your home is your sanctuary, a place you relax and unwind, enjoying time with your family. The last thing you need is a silent, odourless, invisible pest; and there is no nastier pest than radon gas. In Canada alone, over 3000 people die each year due to illnesses caused by radon (takeactiononradon.ca). That’s more than from car accidents!

Radon gas is a naturally occurring product of radioactive elements in the soil. It gets into our homes from the ground, and since it is heavier than air, it can collect in our homes and concentrate to hazardous levels. You can act to reduce it if you know it’s a problem in your home. Airthings smart monitors can measure the radon levels continuously and send those reading right to an app on your phone. In addition, the newest Airthings Wave Plus can measure radon, CO2, and other harmful substances for added protection (One of the prizes for this contest includes a Wave Plus!).

Radon levels are different all over the country

Last year, I sent one Airthings Wave monitor to writers across the country; the readings were then published in a review by Brad Moon on our blog. As you can see from the graph (reproduced here), radon levels vary a lot from place to place.

Best Buy has many kinds of smart technology designed to make your home safer. There are smart cameras, smart lights, smart sensors, and more. Using a monitor designed to detect radon is one way to keep your home safe. And, since placement is so important, you might need more than one if your home has multiple levels. That’s why we are giving each winner of this contest two monitors: so the air you breathe in your home can be safer.

How to enter

Entering is easy, but you can only enter once. First look at the smart home section of Best Buy’s website, then tell us another product (besides Airthings radon monitors) that you think would increase the safety of your home.

What you can win

At the end of this contest, we will select two (2) winners from all eligible entries. One person will win an Airthings Wave Plus and an Airthings Wave, the other person will receive an Airthings Wave and an Airthings Corentium Radon Gas Monitor.

This contest runs from November 28th to December 12th.

Remember, you can only enter once, but tell your family about the risks posed by radon gas so they too can act to protect their home.

  1. Would love a Ring doorbell. Sometimes members of the family are alone in the house and there is always a pit in your stomach when deciding whether to open the door. The RING would alleviate this discomfort.

  2. The Smart Plugs would make my home safer and my life easier. I have a collection of old=style mechanical timers that are either no longer compatible with the new LED lighting or constantly need to be re-set, plugged in or unplugged. The Smart Plugs would help control the indoor lighting more efficiently, especially if I am away.

  3. I would love the Nest x Yale Wi-Fi Smart Lock in Satin Nickel; this would be for my parents’ home as they are getting older.

  4. As we live in a rural area I feel that the Arlo Pro 2 Wire-Free Indoor/Outdoor Security System with 4 1080p HD Cameras would certainly help for security issues.

  5. A motion sensor doorbell camera would be great since I order lots of items online and have had someone steal my packages before.

  6. I think it’d be a good idea to buy and install the First Alert Onelink Safe & Sound Wi-Fi 3-in-1 Smoke & CO Alarm, as it would increase our home safety immensely.

  7. Buying and installing the Ring Wi-Fi 1080p HD Video Doorbell Pro with Chime Pro would enable us to see who is at the door even when not home and would increase home safety.

  8. Arlo Pro 2 Wire-Free Indoor/Outdoor Security System with 4 1080p HD Cameras would be the next security product I would consider purchasing. We have a really extensive in home security system now, but for the outside, motion lights are all we have. I am away as a long haul truck driver, but my most precious cargo is still at home. Keeping an eye on the outside, 24/7 is extremely important. Keeping the ones you love has to be priority one…in my mind. Thank you for ready this short post, good luck to everyone. Merry Christmas…

  9. The doorbell video would be great for safety and definitely every home should have a carbon monoxide detector. I just saw on the new tonight that 50% of the houses in my area have high radon levels. I need this!

  10. The video doorbell would be something that would make me feel safer before answering the door, thanks for the chance!

  11. Video doorbell would be great for safety . I recently was told about the dangers of radon in the home so I would love to win this prize

  12. Another product I think would increase the safety of my home is the “Kidde Battery Operated Wireless Talking Smoke and Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm Bundle.”
