Lego Star Wars-2 b.jpgLEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens is coming soon

LEGO Star Wars fans—we’re mere days away from the grand return of the No. 1 LEGO video game franchise, are you getting excited? On Tuesday, June 28th, TT Games and WB Games are releasing LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens on all major gaming platforms, giving us the opportunity to relive the epic action and thrilling storylines from the blockbuster film through the lens of LEGO’s signature humour. I’ve been waiting to get my hands on this game ever since the reveal back in February, and not only did I get my chance at WB Games’ recent Canadian media launch event, but I also had the thrilling opportunity to meet Toronto Blue Jays’ starting pitcher, R.A. Dickey!

The Canadian launch of LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens took place on Monday, June 20th, inside the Rogers Centre’s swanky TD Comfort Clubhouse located on the 200 level directly behind the home plate. Aside from the modest number of guests in attendance, the Rogers Centre was empty at the time, giving us an incredible panoramic view of the baseball field, and prime seating to watch LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens gameplay broadcasted on the stadium’s massive main videoboard. I’ve seen video games played on huge screens before, but with a size of 110’ x 33’, this display takes the cake.

Playing the latest LEGO Star Wars game on the big screen was none other than R.A. Dickey, who also graciously allowed all guests to take photos with him during a meet and greet portion, and then later gave us all signed official MLB baseballs as gifts. It was also fascinating learning about Dickey’s lifelong passion for the Star Wars franchise in an introductory segment run by Aksel Lielmanis from Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. Dickey said that he passed his love for Star Wars to his four children, calling the films a “rite of passage” for them.

Exploring new features in LEGO Star Wars

LEGO_Star_Wars_Toronto_Event_16.jpgTen gaming stations were also set-up in open booths looking out into the field, and here is where I got my first chance to get hands-on with the new LEGO Star Wars game. One exciting new feature I got to try out was the “Multi-Build” LEGO bricks that enable you to build and re-build different objects using the same set of bricks. In the scenario, I had to get C-3PO up to the second level of a space complex, which I did by first by building a bridge for him to cross a gap, then broke apart those bricks and re-built them as a forklift device to raise him up to the next level. It was a refreshing change from the tried-and-true LEGO gameplay we’ve been familiar with for more than a decade now. A bit later in the demo I also got to experiment with the all-new “Flight” gameplay focusing on high-speed, action-packed, arena-style space battles and dogfights. The graphics were pretty impressive (I played on PS4), and again I enjoyed how TT Games is evolving the gameplay in thrilling new ways.

Fans of the LEGO video game franchise and Star Wars: The Force Awakens are in for a real treat with this game. Not only can you again enjoy iconic moments from the hit film, but you can do so with a hilarious injection of LEGO’s trademark wit and charm. For an authentic experience, the game includes original dialogue from key members of the theatrical cast, including John Boyega (Finn), Adam Driver (Kylo Ren), Harrison Ford (Han Solo), Daisy Ridley (Rey), Oscar Isaac (Poe Dameron), and other stars from the film. Not only is the game going to cover major plot points from the film, it’s also going to explore previously untold stories leading up to the events in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Furthermore, WB Games is going to support LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens post-launch with a Season Pass offering a variety of new content, such as new game levels, more story-driven content, and additional Character Packs containing well-known Star Wars heroes, villains, and droids.

I had a blast at WB Games’ launch event for LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and I think fans are really going to enjoy this one. Keep your eyes on the Plug-In Blog for a review of the game coming soon!
