Best Buy Canada celebrated the grand arrival of Sony’s PlayStation VR in big way, hosting a pair of fan-centric launch parties at their flagship stores in downtown Toronto and Vancouver. Excited PlayStation fans were invited for a night of PlayStation VR game demos, the chance to win exclusive prizes, and of course, the opportunity to be among the first in Canada to purchase their very own PlayStation VR. PlayStation VR, simply put, is out of this world. I already had great experiences with Sony’s newest gaming platform at events like Tokyo Game Show, E3, and Fan Expo Canada, but even my admittedly high expectations were blown away after spending a dedicated week with the VR headset. Sony’s VR tech may not have been the first to the market, nor is it the most powerful, but it offers the best combination of hardware, software, and price of any VR platform available today.

During a recent one hour guided hands-on demo I had with Mafia III, what impressed me the most is the game’s commanding sense of believability. Every square inch of the fictitious town of New Bordeaux (modelled after 1960’s New Orleans), and the cast of larger-than-life characters that inhabit it, felt purposeful and alive—without the extraneous padding often found in large open-world games. It’s this rigorous attention to detail and focused gameplay that could very well make Mafia III a runaway hit during this busy fall season.

The wait is finally over! Sony's highly-anticipated virtual reality headset, PlayStation VR, coming out on October 13. I'll have a full review of the VR device coming soon, so stay tuned. This month also marks the launch of two huge first-person shooter games with the arrival of Battlefield 1, taking us into the visceral all-out combat of World War I, and Titanfall 2, which is coming to PlayStation gamers for the very first time.
