How to make sure your new refrigerator will fit into your kitchen

Measure the Delivery Path

The narrowest pathway must be at least 1 inch wider than the width or depth (whichever is smaller) of your refrigerator.

Make sure every doorway you have can fit the refrigerator through

Doorways

Measure every doorway your new refrigerator will have to fit through, including the front door and elevator (if applicable).

Hallways can be tricky to navigate, especially curves and sharp corners

Make sure your stairs and banisters are wide enough to accommodate your refrigerator in transit

Stairs

Kitchen islands can obstruct the fridge from being placed into it's spot.

Measure the Final Location

Measure the width and height of your cutout to insure your fridge will fit

Cut-out Kitchen

Be sure to account for decorative features such as baseboard moulding, crown moulding, trim, etc.

Leave a gap on top and behind your refrigerator for cleaning and ventilation

Ventilation and Cleaning Room

Measure for at least 1 inch of extra room at the top and back so it has proper ventilation and you can slide it out easily to clean dust.

Door Opening Clearance

Measure for refrigerator door clearance + 1 inch to ensure doors will be able to swing fully open.

French Doors

Divide the width of the refrigerator by 2 and measure each side.

Watch out for the door hitting the kitchen island

Kitchen Island

If your refrigerator is in front of an island, be sure you have enough space to open the doors.

Make room for the door hinge to open wide

Door Hinge Room

If there isn’t 2 inches of space on the door hinge side(s), the refrigerator will need to be pulled out about 2 inches so the door can open.

  1. Good to know that the narrowest pathway must be at least 1 inch wider than the smallest dimension of my fridge. I was thinking up buying a new fridge. I’ll have to make sure I don’t get one that’s too big.

    • Hi Tracey,

I sent your question to the appliance team at Best Buy Canada’s head office. We should get an answer very soon.

      Best regards,
      Martin

  2. Hi,

I am planning to buy LG fridge LFXS28968S which is 29.9 in without the fridge doors. My front door entrance is 31 inch. Can Best Buy movers remove the doors on the fridge? If the fridge still cannot get in, can I return it?

    • Hi Mansoor,

I sent your question to the appliance team at Best Buy Canada’s head office and will let you know when they reply.

      Best regards,
      Martin

    • Hi Mansoor,

I received this response from the appliance team at Best Buy:

“Our Home Delivery Teams will remove the doors of the product only.

The rule of thumb is an inch on each side to allow movement. In this case, I would not recommend purchasing that model.

As well, once the product is open it is non-returnable.”

Let us know if you have any other questions,
      Martin

  3. Hi there – I have 2 questions.
1 – I’m purchasing a fridge with a width stated at 33.13 inches – My space is 34 inches – is that enough space?

2 – The width of the door entry to my house measures 34″ – is that enough to get the above fridge through? If our front door was removed, we would have 35″.

Thank you for your help and time.

  4. Hi, I am interested in a fridge that is 29.75 inches wide. I have exactly 30 inches of space. The height and depth are fine. Will this fill? The doors have space to open; it’s the actually fit of the fridge I am concerned with

    • Hi Marcia, on BestBuy.ca, under Details & Specs on the product page, you can find two specifications for refrigerator height: Height – With Hinges and Height – Without Hinges. You should always reference the Height – With Hinges value if you are constrained by vertical space. Hope this helps!

  5. I have a 38.5″ width space between my kitchen wall and the end of my countertop, is that enough space for a 36″ wide refrigerator?

    • Hi Elizabeth, 2 inches on the door hinge side is sufficient space for a single-door model. You likely would not have enough space for a french door model to open properly as you need 2 inches of space on each door hinge side. Hope this helps!

  6. Hello,

I’ve measured my front door and it measures 33.75 inches wide. The fridge I am considering measures 32.75 inches. According to your tips it states that the width of passageways/doors must be at least 1 inch wider. This is exactly that. Do you think this would be a problem for delivery? Please advise.

    Thanks,

    • Hi Carissa, you should be able to fit it without any issues. There is also the option for the delivery team to remove the doors from the fridge if it is a bit too snug. After you make your purchase, a Best Buy Appliance Concierge Agent will call you to confirm the details of your delivery. It’s a good idea to mention any concerns about doorways on this call so Delivery Team will know what to expect when they arrive at your home. Hope this helps, let me know if you need more info!

  7. Hi I was wanting to confirm the width opening for the fridge is to add + 2 inches is necessary to allow the door to open to a 90 degree angle. >Hence 24 _ 2 =26 inches openings. I am interested in the 24 in ch model so that would be 26 inches for clearances when the fridge is placed against a wall. Please advise

    • Two inches will give you sufficient room around the fridge to allow for the door to open properly. Sounds like you’re on the right track, I hope you enjoy your new fridge!

    • Hi Doris, I recommend taking the handle into consideration. You’ll want to make sure it doesn’t stick out more than you’d like it to given the space you have in your kitchen. Many handles are low-profile and do not add a lot of depth, but it’s always good to check out the measurements. Hope this helps!

    • Hello! Yes, Best Buy can remove and re-install doors on fridges when needed to facilitate delivery through doorways or tight spaces along the delivery path. The only limitation is Smart Fridges or those with waterlines as removal is more difficult. If you require this service, please let an associate know ahead of your delivery so they can book extra time for the delivery. Hope this helps!

    • Hi Crystal, most doors are reversible if the refrigerator has a single door without a water/ice dispenser. You can confirm if the model you’re looking at has a reversible door by looking for the Reversible Doors line in the Details & Specs tab on the product page.

    • Hi Manfred, you can find all specifications for the model you’re looking at in the Details & Specs tab on the product page. Dimensions will be clearly labelled as height, width and depth.
